Since we have had much rain here in Northern California my girls are "bawk-bawking" at me each time I go out to check on them. I think they are demanding I stop the rain since they take shelter in the coop to stay dry. We have a day reprieve today with sun, so they're happy today! They are so...
I've been diagnosed with lung cancer which will result in my being incapacitated at some point in the future. My daughter said that the humane society would take the chickens if I pre-registered them. Does anyone know about this? I plan on posting on this blog but I'd like to check out some...
I have 3 EEs and all 3 have the same look as you show. They have less feathers than they did when juveniles. And have the white lobes. I haven't done anything for the white as I thought it was part of their bodies. I'll try to get a pic and send it along.
I'm not sure about the mites...
I recently lost my friendly beautiful buff Orpington and find that the remaining 3 hens are quieter. I think they need more friends. I am looking for two juvenile hens. Currently have 2 EEs and a RIR would love another buff and EE. Any idea where I could find these?

Miss Susan died on Wednesday May 21, 2014. No known cause. She was a loving and dear hen and friendly pet. I will always remember that she loved to be petted and loved her treats. She is missed.
Hi Bay Area BYCers - Happy to find this forum. I'm in South Bay - Sunnyvale. I know there are a few of you out there in the South Bay.
Went to a Chicken Party for Dawn's 5 pullet hens 1st birthday. Met new BYCers from as far away as Turlock! Great way to meet face to face. Dawn's chickens...
Thanks. The swelling is not getting worse. I'll take a closer look and wash it with saline.
I'm always worrying that the problem is worse than it is. I'll wait and see. Thanks again
My dear Miss Ericka showed up this morning with this swollen area on a gland (?) below her eye. Could this be a bee sting or something more horrible.? Any recommendation to control the swelling?
Instead of fencing the chickens 'in', I'm creating a fence around two raised garden beds to keep the chickens 'out'. Finding wire fencing at a decent price for 60 feet is becoming an ordeal.
I need some wire fencing that is stiff, but holes not too large to trap the chickens. One suggestion...
Thank you. Reassuring that I'm going on the right track. I'll check with garden supply or feed store for more info on what poles should be used to keep a wire fence in place. I'll post pics when I've finished it.
I'm in CA and it's getting warm enough to start planting tomatoes. Costco is...
Hi. I have been struggling with how to actually have veggie garden this year in two raised beds in an area that the chickens free-range. Last year the chickens were young and only were old enough to free range after the plants had started to mature. This winter they have free-ranged over the...
Sounds like a good option. This morning, still not frothy eye. Could it have been an irritant? We're getting a lot of rain (finally) here in California, so I'll see about bathing her and keeping her isolated to dry.
Thanks again for the info.
Late yesterday one of my EEs had frothy eye. I wiped it off and the froth came back. One more time wiping it with a cloth and today no sign of frothy eye. Reading about frothy eye as a symptom of respiratory illness gave me a bad night's sleep. So i called the vet today and he said that he...
