My hens are 18 months old now and they have not molted yet, except for a partial molt when they were about 6 months old. I would have thought the fall weather and shorter days would have triggered a molt prior to winter, but it hasn't. Is it unusual for them to wait this late in the year to...
This was purchased from Meyer Hatchery as a day-old chick, and was supposed to be a Golden Buff, but she also looks a lot like a Rhode Island Red.
What do ya'll think? She is my star egg layer, out of the four breeds I bought she started laying the earliest (just over four months old, whereas...
Thanks! I chose a color scheme put together by Sherwin Williams from their Woodscapes line of exterior stains called "Woodcutters Cottage". The roof is a 12-12 pitch, which is 45 degrees.
A brief timeline
I began building my small coop the weekend of April 13, 2014, I picked up four day-old chicks on the 16th, and the coop was ready for them to move in 10 weeks later, on June 21. It took me about another month to get all the trim installed, and I made minor alterations in the...
Here are my week old babies from Meyer. My wife used the food tray to keep their attention and took beautiful portraits of each one. You can see they all have nice wing feathers starting. It's so funny when they stretch out their wings and you can see this beautiful miniature wing all fanned...
I think you're right about this one being the SS. I got one from Meyer last week and mine looks just like that (except she's started growing wing feathers already)
Thanks, yes the baby human is very interested in the baby chickens! He begged and pleaded the whole way home from Meyer to let him hold the chicks. They're all doing very well now, even the Barred Rock, eating and drinking and pooping.
Ok folks, here are the first few pictures of my new chicks, picked up today! Clockwise from yellow: Golden Buff, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, and Barred Rock.
They seem to be doing ok so far, although the barred rock hasn't shown much interest in eating or drinking. The...
All these pics of chicks is making me want to bump up my order to come sooner, which is probably not wise. I have a very busy March, and won't be able to start building my coop until April anyway. I just turned in my application to the city planning commission and I actually have to show up at...
I'd leave the compost there, otherwise you'll have a low spot that will collect water. Also, as you pointed out, the compost will be great for them to scratch around in.

I'm new to this as well, my chicks are supposed to hatch April 16th, so I only know what I've read. Regarding buying extra feed ahead of time, I read that you only want to buy enough to keep one month in advance and that you should check the manufacture date on the bag to make sure it's...

Thanks for the tip about Grace Brothers, I work near their West 65th St. store so I may try to make it over there for one of their classes. I'm in Cleveland Heights, so kind of NE Cuyahoga County, but used to spend a fair amount of time in Berea. You might also check out Harvey...
