Hi all - I've been absent from the boards for quite some time. Awhile back I became very interested in Buckeyes, but have yet to purchase any. I had already placed chick orders prior to my interest flowering this spring, so decided I needed to get through spring and summer. I offloaded pullets...
Laurie - I was wondering about admission when we were there yesterday. I wasn't sure if there was any and checked out the website this morning. We came about 9am, so not sure if admission was still being collected. However, we didn't get asked to pay anything. When we left we realized we...
Hi all! Haven't been on in awhile. Got an auto waterer worked up today. Went from the usual plastic waterer from the feed store to a nipple system. Hoping everyone learns to use it! Is just a bucket w/nipples on the bottom with the toilet refiller thingy hooked up via hose to the faucet to keep...
Have a question for everyone. Where do you get your pine shavings? Looking for ideas other than buying individual bags. Both Theisen's and F&F sell by the pallet-load (bags on a pallet) but it's not hardly a savings - was only 10 cents/bag at F&F. I need to do a coop clean-out in a major way and...
I just pulled out my Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens (1995 not the new one) and in the Showing section she mentions beak trimming. She has a sketch of a crossed beak which says, "A cross beak is a genetic deformity; such a bird should be culled." She then has a sketch of an overgrown beak...
You might want to add a big cinder block to their run or coop just so she has ample opportunity to use it...Lowes sells them for like $2 if you don't have any.
Do you have any concrete blocks or floor or something like that where she could rub her beak and hopefully sand it down herself like the other poster talked about?
Sounds a lot more like she's egg bound. I'm assuming she's been laying before this happened? Search for egg bound in the archives. Can be very serious. Keep her warm and in a dark place. She needs calcium so yogurt is a good suggestion.
I have no experience with this at all, but my first hunch is to say that she needs her beak trimmed to match up with its other half. I'd suggest a trip to your vet.
Anyone have any or know anyone with Buckeye eggs around the Quad Cities IA/IL? My one bantam hen just started acting broody and I'd love to put some eggs under her...but would like to pick up locally.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I put in sponges and that helped. Overnight tonight I'm going to calibrate and see what I get. I had them calibrated last year but didn't redo it this year, so that could be the reason!
Good luck and warm wishes to those of you in ice-land! I was shocked we didn't lose power in the Quad Cities area. We lost it for 8 hrs at our house in the last big snow storm. 2-3 days - YUCK! Stay warm out there!!
I haven't checked calibration, that's a good idea. I'm using 2 temp/hygrom's from Walmart and both are showing nearly the same temp and humidity, so I'd like to believe since they're reading the same that they're correct, but calibrating is a great idea. I'll also try the sponge technique.
Thanks!
Hi all,
I'm trying to get my incubator stabilized for the first time since last summer. My temps have stabilized but I can't get my humidity over 40% or so. Sometimes I get it up to 50% for a little while then it goes back down. I have an LG with a auto turner and I've mounted a 3" computer...
