I've got the incubator set up in my classroom with the temperature stabilized. I stopped collecting eggs from my coop last Saturday, so that I'd have enough eggs to hatch. Since Saturday two hens have laid 7 eggs, which I will remove from under them in the morning and take to school. So, do I...
I've been looking at websites that let you order heartworm medicines without a prescription. Has anyone had any experiences, good or bad with this? These websites offer both heartgard and other generic medicines. I'm thinking about ordering from one of the websites but I don't want to get...
A hawk attacked my little bantam hen, Nellie. My husband beat it off her and saved her. She's still alive but seems kind of in shock. She's got blood on her neck and in her mouth. But she is moving her head around and looking around. Is there anything else
I should do besides keep her quiet?
I just let the chickens out and 10 minutes later my DH told me he put fire ant poison out. So we run out to put them back in the coop and discovered that they had already eaten the poison off two of the fire ant hills. So now I will just wait and see what happens I guess. I took their water...
Everytime I crack an egg and throw away the shell I think there must be some use for them. Years ago I remember my aunt soaking them in water and then watering her plants with it. I'm not sure why she did this. Anybody save their eggshells for any reason?
My chickens wander through the garden scratching for bugs and never bother any plants - until they discovered the broccoli plants I put in last week. They ate them right down to the stem, not a leaf left. Guess I won't be eating broccoli this year.
How do you keep your eggs sorted by age in the refrigerator? I try to make a mental note which carton is the oldest but I always forget. Do you write a date or number on the carton? I sometimes have 3 or 4 cartons of eggs in the fridge at one time, until I give some away. What's your system...
I'm just wondering because I love to hand feed my chickens. They fly up and sit on my lap while I feed them scraps of bread, for example. I tear the bread into tiny pieces but once in awhile they grab a big piece and I'm afraid they might choke on it. Has anyone ever had that happen?
My uncle gave me a half gallon of maple syrup. We don't use it fast enough to keep it from getting mold on it. So I thought about dividing it up into half pint jars and canning it but I don't want to heat it too long and mess it up. Has anyone ever tried this?
Nellie is making a weird kind of coughing/sneezing kind of yelping noise. This will happen once or twice and then not again for about 15 or 20 minutes. Also her breathing sounds like a moaning sound sometimes. Right now she's breathing quietly. She's just standing in one spot. Her eyes and...
Has this happened to you? You look at Recent Topics, see a couple interesting messages, and by the time you read the first one and go back to Recent Topics to find the other one it's gone - replaced by new topics. And you're like - but, I was going to read that! Then you can't even remember...
My husband's friend has his chicken coop all built and ready for chickens. He's been asking my DH where to buy purebred chickens. Not sure what he wants but I told DH I'd try to help. Are there any farms in SC or southeastern NC where he can go look at the chickens and pick some out? I tried...
After scanning some of the messages on this thread I realized I hardly have anything on hand to treat my birds if they get sick. I've been really lucky, all I've had to deal with in the 18 months that I've had chickens is roundworms and lice. So I have some Wazine 17 and Sevin dust but that's...
My pa-in-law put two containers of tomatoes into my freezer. He said they were all peeled, cut-up and ready to can "whenever I got around to it". Well, that was two months ago, because I'm a teacher and the first few weeks of school are so busy. So the tomatoes are still in my freezer. Can I...
Well I'm sitting in a hotel in Charleston with my sister, who took me to a Bruce Springsteen concert last night. She saw the concert in Jacksonville, FL, Friday night and she'll see the concert in Richmond tomorrow night. She's probably been to more than 50 Springsteen concerts over the last...
My DD who is home from college has been keeping really late hours. I understand that sometimes she doesn't get off work until midnight and that she wants to see her friends and have a social life. But, it bothers me when she's out so late. I wake up and realize she's not home, and then I...
Ladies, if you are looking for a good summer read, pick up firefly lane by Kristin Hannah. It's about two girls who have been best friends since the 70's. If you are in your 40's, you will really understand this story. The details brought back so many memories. But get a box of kleenex...
I gave my flock Wazine on June 17th, after I discovered roundworms. I'm following the directions on the bottle which say to repeat the medicine in 30 days to break the roundworm cycle. So I want to make sure I wait a long enough time after the next treatment which will be July 17th. I do have...
Time Warner Cable has this link to Photoshow. I made a short video of my chickens and I think it turned out kind of cool. Here it is:
