    Can I get attached....

So fun update.... Hen or Roo my little popcorn Polish is here to stay. Kinda spoiled little fluff that every time I'm feeding or cleaning the coop needs to sit here and supervise. Still unsure if my little Brahma is a hen or Roo, now hitting 8 weeks, rather adorable and enjoys just following me...

    First Coop!!!

O.o Oh my! Ok, definitely something that will be fixed when I go to add the metal roofing. I should be able to hold off until May/June and I can enlist some help in that department.

    First Coop!!!

I can in the morning but from the side it is a > basicly with a steady incline upwards the largest section toward the front of the coop with a bib to protect To much wind and then rain from being pushed into the coop. Then 2x4's that run across that and the middle support that hold up plywood...

    First Coop!!!

Ok so the hobbit Hole got nixed... I think its because I've already begun the chicken math issue.... Partner: "Honey where did these ones with the feathers on their head come from?" Me: "I've no idea, maybe it was one of the breads we got in the mix... they look like the black and white...

    Can I get attached....

Help any bit? No real comb color or waddles at all yet. Thus kinda have my fingers crossed. Some one mentioned maybe my middle bing a Brahma which makes sense as I ordered all large breeds. I grew attached to these three because they made the first non chip noises, they 'scold' my dogs in their...

    Can I get attached....

Ok about a month ago I got my chicks from Meyers. They had been dropped in their box along the way and my meats were mixed in with my egg layers! So ya, trying to pick out 15 egg layers mixed with 50 meat birds was hard (They were mixed heavy breed meats and mixed egg layers) To boot this is my...

    At what age can you....

Oh I dont mean to put DE on them now, but when they are old enough to go out into the coop. I live in the worst part of the state for flea/tick issues and not sure if that could also add into mites/lice and other pest nasties that could get in. Better safe than sorry type of deal. We'd switch...

    At what age can you....

I'm feeding Purina Start and Grow unmedicated. I am just down to maybe 2-3 days left of my bag and wondering what to move/use next. Either keep using it, use medicated, or take the next step up. I'm leaning toward one or two more bags though.

    cutest chicken names!

We have only named one of our new flock... our 'extra' chick a buff lace Polish is now "Lady Gaga.." AND if it turns out to be a roo... good thing my family joked on facebook that the breed looks like Big Bird gone drag and it can still work!

    At what age can you....

So, I've three questions. 1) When should I switch from chick feed to Grower/Layer Feed? 2) Any tips for sexing birds? My shipment was dropped and my Fry Pan barngains (Meat roo's) got all mixed up with my egg layers. (See bellow) SO not only are my breed's all mixed but so are genders. I had to...

    Hobbit Hole Coops

Sorry about that Aart. I'm from Rhode Island, so we have kinda mixed weather, but we live in the part of RI that is like her Bermuda triangle for cold. -2 elsewhere. Nope -16 here. 1 inch of snow elsewhere, nope 8 here... Plus side, we don't have a flooding issue. So far what I'm getting is...

    Hobbit Hole Coops

One thought was overlapping the roof. That way it hides the vents from view and prevents rain from going into the coop but lets in fresh air. I'm just fearfull of the 'omg growing grass/moss/flowers/whatnot' on and around it may be -to- much moisture. The coop isn't going to have power, only a...

    Hobbit Hole Coops

Ok, so I fell in love with Hobbit Hole coops, I mean who can't they are so bloody cute! Anyhow, what do you all think of them. This is my first time doing chickens as we are working on homesteading. Logically to us this seemed a decent Idea. Build the 'chicken run' up around them so they have...

    'ello from Lil Ol' Rhody!

I got my chicks! So excited. The coop is well under way, all the walls are build and prescrewed. Just waiting for the snow to finish melting so we can move it outside! Simple coop for starters as we are really looking into 'hobbit hole' coops. Maybe actually burying it a bit so it can act as...

My partner and I are looking to go off the grid and self sustaining as much as possible, as well ready supply nearly 90% of our own...
