Title pretty much sums it up...stepdaughters dog got off his chain and attacked a mallard hen with a brood of 15 2 week old ducklings. One has a broken leg, right above the little knee joint. I tried to put it in the brooder but its frantic.
Is there any way it will even heal? I can put a few...
I need help. Lol I have a turkey hen that won't leave me alone! :P
I decided, for some odd reason, to get a couple of heritage Royal Palm turkeys this last spring. I have never kept turkeys past the point of dinner (about 6 months of age) so I didn't know what to expect. All i know is I wanted...
I had a heartbreaking failure of brain function and lost a week old chick because I forgot to safeguard the water pan. :(
Long story short, too much on my mind, too many projects, and too many birds having babies at the wrong time of year overloaded my plate and I forgot a critical component to...
I discovered a breed I think I need :D
True blue whiting? Never heard of it until I was playing with the chick selector on McMurrays... Here they are.

They sound intriguing, almost exactly what I'm attempting to cross myself!

I see so many posts about losing our chickens, and I feel every bit as mad, hurt, and irresponsible as the next person when i lose one.
But I wanted to share this one, as a reminder to never count your chickens before they're hatched, and don't give up hope that someone may in fact be missing...
I haven't seen much on here about fermenting feed for people, but we do it for our chickens, so why not start? :)
The benefits to fermented feed have been understated for most of our generation, if not the entire 20th century, and from personal experience of repairing the damage of years of...
I have a lone chick, hatched out 3 weeks ago; a little surprise from a bantam gold laced Cochin and a Red Star rooster... Curious of wgat cross in Big Bird caused the chick to have these whitish feathers with grey specks...
So, I have too many chickens.... Chicken math yay lol.... This started as a joke between the DH and I, when earlier this year, this gal:
Started doing THIS in our camper, which got me in trouble with the DH lol, for letting her....
So we started locking the camper, and now she does THIS...
I've been looking at cutting a buck here and there with my feed recipe, and am switching from whole wheat to wheat middlings.. Nutrient ratio is a little bit different, so im having to shift concentrations of everything else... :P
I found some good info, including this one...
Like the title says, mysteryyyy... The little white one, kinda has a grey mug....
Sorry, its not too photogenic, just coming off a truck and out of a box and all ;)
Better pics later, thanks in advance!
I have a hen that follows me everywhere, always right ony heels no matter where I go... We have an old camper in the garden, kindof an oasis when it's hot etc.... This hen had been bugging me to let her in... I mean, BUGGING me; flying up to the windows, flying to the top, trying to clsw through...
This growth just appeared over the last few days, hen is 5 months old, just started laying... We had a horrible storm a few nights ago; thought at first it was an injury, but now looks like some sort of skin tag?
Should i snip it off? Peroxide? Iodine? I already want to cull her because of it...
Whoooo... Touchy subject... Ive been reading and rereading, joined some lively conversations... And it has become clear to me that there is a huge discrepancy between what members believe is "legal", " humane", and "ethical"..
I would like to ATTEMPT to open a mature, adult, conversation about...
I think im having nesting syndrome lol... We have 34 bobs in the bator, scheduled to pip on Sunday... I have never hatched bobs, and have to admit i am quite nervous after reading all these threads on baby quail problems.... Oh these eggs are so tiny, im scared lol.
Im a mother. I got this...
I have 2 daughters, ages 9 and 6, and my oldest is starting to show interest in helping process birds... I was curious at what age, and how, did you/ will you start teaching the kids to process? What age were YOU? Tips? Things that can help, since so far, DH and I are big meanies... Because she...
Long story short, my rooster is petrified of my Barred Rocks. He is a Red Star, just 20 weeks... He has 10 younger ladies his age that he adores lol, but every time a BR even gets close, he gets all stupid and acts like they are going to kill him.... Lol theyre squatting for him, but he runs...

I wanted to share a wonderful site about permaculture written by Paul Wheaton...http://www.richsoil.com/raising-chickens.jsp
I use permaculture and incorporating chickens into it can be tricky! But the benefits far outweigh the first year of set up. After that, its easy as pie and...
