One order from MurrayMcMurray yielded 5 roosters out of 25. Another smaller order of 8 from MPC (which arrived late with three dead) has yielded 2 roosters- my speckled sussex. Interestingly one matured a month before the other! They are huge.
I have already gotten rid of the Andalusian and...
It depends on what you mean as a brooder and what your outside temps are. My chicks have always been raised in a shed I have a heat lamp suspended from the ceiling and a cardboard ring to keep them from wondering off. As they get bigger the lamp goes higher. I am in NY and if I were raising...
He is a terror and I have him separate from the girls. Also crows non stop. So his new name is "dinner". Except he seems awfully scrawny. I have never eaten one of my chickens before soI may not be the best judge.
The boy is now about 11 weeks old.
These birds were delivered the week of June 1st... Now I will have to cull, one if not more... The EE is quiet, the andalusian is erlentlessly going after my year old hen, the speckled sussex is HUGE and the jury is out on the austrolop,
The analusian does not look very meaty, but is the worst...
I have only 5 hens left from last springs order and have 25 new chicks soon to leave teh brooder house. Rather than merging the flocks, I am thinking that I would like to dispatch my older ones...
Are they only good for stock at this point?
THoughts?
No chance that they are white rocks?
They are free ranging starting this week and are ok tempermentally, no problems. The most curious of my 30 plus, the first ones to do everything.
. I had a feeling that they could be leghorns, but given their rep I was sort of hoping not.
I do wonder how...
We are into our third day of record heat. So far, I have added frozen water bottles to their waterers (idea from this site which works great). They do seem to pant less after drinking the cold water.
THe hen house is in the shade and I am letting them free range in the shade under trees...
I got a SS from MPC also in my variety pack. I just posted a few other pictures. See if any of them look familiar to you. Also I did get 5 yellow/white/cream birds.
We got him from a neighbor when our friendly australop was killed. This guy is not too friendly with me, but is ok with the hens....
He is the only rooster in our flock, previously he lived with several others, and was the only one with tailfeathers, sorta.
My husband is way too attached to roosters as well... Ours got picked off by a neighboring dog (sacrificing himself for the flock). We got a new one from a neighbor. He started out fine, is good with the hens (actually a few of the more dominant ones won't allow him to mate). But he has started...
The reality is that one thing or another may well get them before it beomes an issue, especially if they free range. My hen house is predator proof, but we made the decision to give our flock quality of life. And they have their place in the food chain.
Don't get me wrong. We have a good dog...
