Rendered lard for first time - it separated?

I have raised pigs for a few years now. Always raised the same way and fed the same grain. This year when I rendered lard it separated or was not as firm as usual. I am very frustrated as this year I was hoping to free up freezer space and store the lard on the shelf. 1. I put it in the fridge...

    Buff Brahma with neck issue

Thanks, I also think it is feather plucking. I don’t see any of the other chickens bothering her though. I did take a look at her this morning and the area is back to a normal skin color. Maybe because the weather is nicer and they are out roaming more it has stopped?? I will keep an eye on it

    Buff Brahma with neck issue

This is Sassafras, an almost year old Buff Brahma. I noticed her neck was losing feathers about a month or more ago. I thought no biggie, maybe a molt? It still hasn’t grown new feather and is red and warm to the touch in that area but skin around it is normal and fine. So what’s happening? I...

    Any Home Bakers Here?

I used strawberries I froze this past summer, thawed and drained them. I did follow the recommendation and only made half the glaze and even that was a bit much. The kids all enjoyed it but my oldest said it would have been good without the glaze.

    Any Home Bakers Here?

I only had time for a couple of bites but it was delicious! Definitely a keeper of a recipe. The real test will be when the kids get home from school. 😉

    Any Home Bakers Here?

I just finished a new recipe for a strawberry bread with a strawberry glaze. I probably should have let the bread finish cooling but who has time for that 😁

    Any Home Bakers Here?

New here but I wanted to ask if anybody has a good frosting recipe? I made a chocolate zucchini cake last night and didn’t want to use my old buttercream frosting recipe so I tried a cooked frosting recipe from Pinterest. not so good 🤦🏻‍♀️ Does anybody have a favorite vanilla frosting recipe...

    Toys in the coop

I added a xylophone this winter for boredom. Apparently they aren’t that bored. It’s never been touched 😅

    Reputable Hatchery

I am new to having layers but have raised meat birds for a few years. I purchased our current chicks through our local feed store but I would like to get different breeds of layers next year as well as my meat birds. Does anybody have recommendations for good hatcheries for layers and meat birds?

    Uninsulated coop in northern areas

We partially covered the ceiling so they can’t roost in the rafters anymore. We also covered the back wall with plywood inside to stop the draft on windy nights and we changed up the roosting bars but I can’t figure out how to set up the poop board because of the location of the nesting boxes...

Not sure if this is something to worry about or not

I am a chicken newbie and I was wondering what this whitish on the comb could be? Maybe it’s normal, I have no idea

    Uninsulated coop in northern areas

I wished we had put the chicken door on the other side of the coop so it wouldn’t get the winter wind but it wasn’t something I thought of in July. I was mostly thinking about watching the chicken parade from my kitchen window when my daughter lets them out in the morning. I will try to figure...

    Uninsulated coop in northern areas

I am trying the deep litter method as well but the chickens don’t seem to scratch under the roosting bars. I am also having a problem with a chicken sleeping in a nesting box every night. She is a new girl and lowest in rank. I am not sure if that’s the issue or that I had a roosting bar lower...

    Uninsulated coop in northern areas

We are new to having layers. We built a sweet coop this summer and decided not to insulate it. A neighbor told us that the birds will tolerate the cold just fine. Everything went well this summer but now winter is here and I am worried that the chickens are freezing out in the coop at night. The...

    Freshly butchered turkey

At this point I think I may have to throw in the towel and cook ribs tomorrow instead. I don’t think I have time to brine and slow cook it and have it on the table for 2 tomorrow afternoon. I don’t want to serve everybody shoe leather or waste an animal we have been raising since April. Thanks...
