Well everything seems to be back to normal. Our 5 girls are laying between 3-5 eggs daily now for the last few weeks. In the last two weeks alone, they have not laid less than 4 eggs! They're laying faster than we can eat them, lol. But man are they delicious!! Definitely can tell the difference...
Well she seems to be herself again. I have no idea what what was going on with her today, but it had me worried. I did find one soft egg (shell less). Don't think it was from her anyways. Thanks.
She's a little over 6 months old. She's laid flawlessly since she started two weeks ago. She doesn't sit down, she just looks around and seems "bored". I don't know if maybe she fell off in the pecking order, but the other hens don't seem to mess with her...no bullying, pecking, or avoidance...
One of my hens, Piper, is not acting like herself today. She seems to not be interested in anything. She isn't following the flock (4 other birds) and seems to just stand around as if balled up. I checked for egg binding, but I'm almost certain she laid today. All my girls seem to wanna use the...
Thanks. Yes, the 2nd egg was a bit misshapened...looked like a little round potato, lol. I actually have one of my BRs in the coop right now by herself. She's been in there for about 20 minutes now. Normally they're running and chasing each other when I let them out in the morning, lol. I don't...
Well I just dug around some more online and YES, it is possible for a chicken to lay more than one egg in a 24hr period. However, it is not common. I called my vet and he said not to worry, it's more than likely due to her first laying cycle and will eventually start laying either one egg a day...
I don't know. I've been playing things back in my head to see if there's any way I could have been mistaken. I cleaned the coop out and removed three eggs while doing so. When I put in fresh hay and straw, she was the only hen to go right inside and started scooping out the corner of the coop...
I watched it! She was in the coop by herself for about 15 minutes moving the fresh hay around. When she came out, there was an egg in there...No other eggs were in the coop at that time because I had picked them up before cleaning the coop. Then she walked over to the edge of the fence and laid...
We have four Barred Rocks and two Marans. They just started laying today at 6 months old. One of my Marans has laid two eggs within 10 minutes of each other. The first one cracked and the other was a bit misshapened. Both eggs had hard shells and seemed to be healthy...minus the shape. Is it...
She came home!!! I was out around 7:30pm putting the rest of the flock to bed, and there she was! She was trying to get back into the yard pacing the opposite side of the fence. She's back with the rest of the girls and I'm so relieved. I was almost certain that a hawk got a hold of her and we...
We went out to check on our 6 chickens that free range in our fenced in yard. One of them was missing! Our smallest (runt) was nowhere to be found. We've seen hawks before but put plenty of hiding places out for them. Never had an issue with them, at least none that I know of. I noticed a small...
I have a question. Can chicks from the same clutch be different colors, as if they were crossbred? I have one "barred rock" that looked like the rest of our girls when we bought them, but now looks like a cross between a cuckoo maran and barred rock. We have two cuckoo marans and four barred...
What is the overall disposition of a Maran? I ask because I have two cuckoos in a flock of six, made up of 2 Marans and 4 Barred Rocks...all pullets. I have one Maran that seems to do her own thing. She's not afraid to wonder on her own when I let them out of the coop to roam the yard. She's...
I really don't care for this coop though. Putting it together took a little guess work, as there were missing/not provided holes for the screws. It also did not hold up to the rain at all! The roof is completely warped and the whole coop is flimsy at best. We plan on building our own. On a...
New to chickens and we have 4 Barred Rocks and 2 Cuckoo Marans. They are 2 weeks old and when we let them out for their 20 minutes (supervised) they run, fly and chase each other, lol. They're like "bumper chickens", lol.
