I am making sweet potato casserole for our church's Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. I boiled fresh sweet potatoes for this and had everything mixed. I was adding the eggs and cracked one that looked like a developing embryo or was rotten. I wasn't sure, because I grabbed a spoon and quickly...
So our family was sitting around the table tonight talking about how the atmosphere of old feed stores is so great: Creaky wooden floors that you can see through, along with the smell of feed and seed. Our favorite one was demolished a couple of years ago, but we still have two in our area...
Hey, everyone--
Thanks for the great input! Well, I went today and bought 3 brown leghorns. The feed store added 25 of these to their recent order because of me. Those were the only leghorns the hatchery had at the time, but I assume they are as prolific layers as the white leghorns. They...
I wanted to get some Leghorns this week to add some white eggs to my basket. I already have light brown, aqua and olive. I should be getting some Cuckoo Marans next week from a good breeder - so those will be my dark brown additions.
A friend of mine said that she is getting rid of her...
Last year, the snow was wonderful at first. We got 6 inches!!! My daughter's 14th birthday party was planned for the next day. We were going to have her and her friends make homemade pizzas for the party. Well, on Friday the electricity went out with the snow and was out for 36 hours!!! On...
Maybe she meant that they were on medicated starter for the first 8 weeks or so and have been on non-medicated grower these last 12 weeks. 20 weeks would be more likely to give you 5 pound chickens.
Thanks for your replies. The Munsters comment made me laugh out loud, while I was drinking coffee.
I contacted the breeder, and she said that the roo and some of the hens have these tufts. So I guess that is my answer.
I'll try to remember when he's mature to post pics. I do plan on keeping...
Yesterday I noticed that my 6-week-old cockerel, Sam, has ear tufts like Einstein. I did some research and found that this is an Auracana trait.
I hatched Sam and his 5 siblings from eggs in which both parents were EE. The other 5 chicks do not show this trait. They all had the same roo...
Feathersnuggles is right. My hosting site is goofing up. It's been doing that on my online auctions, too. I've used them for years - don't know what the problem is lately. I have to leave for church now, so hope it comes up soon. I'll be gone all day today. Have to check it and bump it...
Thanks for the input and bumps, everyone.
Rstampa, I never even thought about ant bites. We have fire ants in abundance here, and that is very likely.
If anyone else has any other ideas, additional posts will be appreciated.
:/My 6-week-old EE (I think pullet) has wart-like growths on her feet. Her 5 hatchmates do not show similar symptoms at this time. We just went through fowl pox with my 4 month old chickens, but they are far separated from the younger chicks. I have been wearing one pair of shoes and tending...
That sounds good, Guitarists. I like yams, too.
I'm looking for a recipe that either roasts the whole duck or the duck pieces cut up in a sauce or gravy. I'd rather not debone the breast meat or anything.
My daughter told me today that it is a Muscovy duck, if that makes a difference.
My daughters helped some friends process meat birds yesterday and came home with 3 chickens and a duck, already processed of course. Since I have just one duck, I want to prepare it in some tender, succulent way.
This family's chickens are tender and juicy (Cornish X), and the duck is some...
