I answered a local neighborhood post about a chick found loose in the airport cargo area (all domestic cargo, so I'm thinking it escaped from a legit hatchery box). Either way, I'm now raising a single mystery chick. Any guesses on the breed?

Today we returned home from a long weekend up north. I went to take our eggs out of the nesting boxes only to find them covered with teeny tiny bugs. I need help figuring out what they are and what to do about them.
Here's the scoop... they were less than a mm (probably about the size of...

Security was my main focus, then ease of care. I have no intention of out growing my design, but even so, full walls would not give me more floor space. When it's snowin' and a blowin' or raining cats and dogs, it is so nice to be all the way inside to clean and care for...
For my 5 girls, I started with an old 10'x10' shed. I added the two side windows and the window on the door. The one on the door is just for light. The side windows have screen and hardwire over them. In the winter I clamp Lexan over them. These inside pictures were taken during...
OK, this might be a little bratty because I don't make it out here very often and post even less often, but...

My 5 girls were born Aug. of '09. Last winter they all began laying between Dec. and Feb.. Late this fall, and until very recently, they went through a molt. Most have still not started laying again which is to be expected with the winter down turn and the molting. However, I have now found...
You will get an overload of information and opinions on all of those other threads. I'm in Wisconsin. The most important things are keep them dry, ventilation but no drafts, and water. Some add heat lamps, insulation and so on. Your BO's are good winter birds (heavy and full of feathers)...
Pictures, or even better video. Call the police now and get a report filed. Work on getting pictures and video (even if you have to make a show of leaving and risk your other birds) and take this thing all the way (short of the aforementioned land mines and the like).
I have left my five girls several times on weekend trips (usually only two nights/ one full day and two partials). I have left them up to three nights without someone checking on them. Beyond that I have some stop by mid trip to collect eggs and check on them.
I have five girls who are a year old. I have one EE, Ester, who has always been at the bottom of the pecking order. In the last week, I have seen my two bossiest girls, Alice a red sex-link and Charlotte a SLW, gang up on her several times. Alice mounts Ester and holds her down while...
It's 250 Watt BDT250 bird bath heater (compact aluminum base) from API (Allied Precision Industries, Inc.). I didn't do any research on it, just grabbed it when I saw it on sale at the local home improvement store.
I use a bucket with nipple waterers. In the winter I throw in a bird bath heater (do birds really take baths when a heater is needed?). It works great. No wet combs.
