A few days ago I posted about finding babies under my broody hen...Well, here they are!
We moved them from the community coop into her own private pen late on the second night after 3 hatched and still with one egg. She did fine and is a VERY protective momma!
Just after she came off the nest...
The second egg is pipping and when I candled the other 2 there is movement at the edge of the air pocket sorta like they are trying to break into that end of the egg. I guess those are good signs.
I'm worried that moving momma now will make her abandon the unhatched eggs and not take care of...
Broody momma has been sitting for several weeks. We marked the 4 eggs she seemed so intent on, just to see... WELL, this morning we found one chick and another of the eggs is cheeping. Didn't hang around to check the other 2 eggs because momma seemed agitated.
We had planned to move momma from...
Well, we survived the hurricane unscathed for the most part. I lost a dogwood tree and one of the shrubs in my flower bed, but nothing more. We didn't lose power and our Dish Network never faltered. Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts.
Here are a few photos...
The big coop survived...
Well, we are prepared about as good as we can be. Earl is nearly upon us. We are under mandatory evacuation orders, but we are staying put. It is 6pm and we've been told to expect the worst between 7pm tonight and noon tomorrow. So far we have only light wind gusts, but the surf is really kicked...
Another update! While I was in the house thinking that they were just outside cleaning up, they were actually washing out the intestines. Chicken Chitterlings?
They also cut the beaks off and took the heads and cut the toenails off and took the feet. Nothing went to waste today. I feel really...

Oh, hey, I did figure out how to post a link. Neat!
This should be the washing machine chicken plucker. (I hope)
Our chickens are 15 weeks old now and have been free ranging in the yard for at least half that time. Eight of the 10 roos will be butchered today.
How long should we hold them in the fridge before cooking? Should they be frozen first?
What is the best way to cook them? Crock-pot, roasting...
Sweet, no lemon. If a restaurant only has un, then I'll get it and add Splenda. Hubby won't get iced tea at a restaurant if it's unsweetened. Sugar won't disolve in cold tea, unless you add tons, at which point it looks like you're drinking a snow globe.
We have a huge mint bed and we used to...
A few weeks ago there was an all day tv marathon of Billy the Exterminator. We happened to watch one episode dealing with bats. He used soapy water to shoo them out of an attic louver. I searched for the episode online, but couldn't find it. I do know that it's the first episode of the season...
I live on the OBX and we have a large hispanic community here. I asked around until I found a man who raises his own chickens for meat. I asked him (through an interpreter) if he was interested in processing our 8 roos. He is going to bring everything he needs to do the job and we are going to...
I know NOTHING about motors, but I saw a wizbanger on youtube made out of a washing machine. What type of motors do they have? Looks to me like a washer would be pretty easy to modify.
Thanks for the links. I think we are going to stick with keeping only two.
We have no particular breeding goal in mind, but we've toyed with the idea of letting our 2 BO hens hatch chicks if they were to decide to give motherhood a try. We've been told that one of our roos looks remarkably...
My Mother's Day babies are all grown up now. We have identified 10 of the 24 as cockrels (huge combs, saddle feathers, and they CROW). Tomorrow our friend is coming over to help with processing.
We are thinking of keeping 2 roos, but wonder if that will leave too few hens per roo. We already...
Laree,
What kind of chicken is the second one from the left in the last picture? I have two that look exactly like that.
Are all chickens with poofy feathers on the tops of their heads polish or polish x? I have several with poofies, but not not as outrageous as yours.
Congrats! They are pretty and I'm green with envy.
My new chicks won't start laying for another 8 weeks minimum. I don't know which, if any of my girls might lay green eggs, but I have my fingers crossed.
Well, I guess the masses have spoken. Roo it is.
And yep, it looks like this guy has chosen his harem already established, but I'll still keep a watch out for the next several nights to see if he is serious.
Thanks everyone
