What Special Treat or Yummy Did Your Flock Get Today?

I set my Frozen Cone of Doom in the coop with the girls 5am this morning before leaving for work and they were all worked up over the foreign-ness of it. Evil rating of about 6-7 judging from their reaction.

This was inspired by another BYCer (mine was a smaller scale, her thing was a small bucket) where I took scratch, boss, and torn up kale into a plastic cup, and filled with water to freeze into a big frozen block of time-delayed treat dispenser/cooler. The boss floats, the scratch sinks, and the kale fills the void in between, making for something with a gourmet flair.

Watching them remotely they are clearly intrigued, but it appears like they were egging each other to take the first peck. Someone gave in to peer pressure because a couple hours later I find it knocked over and all three working on it from all sides. Two are taking a break now, and the BO appears to be working on what's left.

It's easy to prepare in advance and is now part of their treat repertoire. I'll admit I was a little tired when I made it, and initially put it in the fridge to freeze, lol.

After reading the post about raisins I decided to chop some up and put them into the girl's bowl of oatmeal and plain yogurt. I went into the house for a moment and when I came back everything was gone. So that is a hit.

My chicks just can't seem to get into BOSS so I am gonna try sprouting them. I wonder if they are sproutable. We shall see. I used to sprout all kinds of beans and seeds for some parrots I had. They are supposed to be most nutricious at sprout.

The other day we had a surplus of green beans so I steamed some and tossed them into the pen. The beans were totally ignored. After awhile I went in and opened up a few to show them the beans inside. Well then the beans disappeared!

We did a little cleanup today, so the girls got two tiny, under-ripe pumpkins that were growing in the compost pile, tarragon, chives, oregano and a clump or two of Bermuda grass. The pumpkins and grass were the biggest hits.

i used to have chives, tarragon and oregano growing in the herb garden, they were a treat for the girls for a little while and now i don't

today they got last nights leftover salad of lettuce, grated fresh beetroot and mung bean sprouts with mayonnaise. i've now got a pile of reddish mung bean sprouts by the back door. they've been getting a tub of hummus everyday for a while now and absolutely love it! keep getting given them just about expired, jalapeno and lime flavour seems to be the favourite.

Today mine had some slightly freezer burned broccoli that we couldn't serve at work, and some leftover cooked brown rice. Yesterday it was lettuce, tomato, and diced canned peaches (left over from work). Their absolute favorite so far has got to be hard boiled egg, followed closely by the guts out of a cantalope. My girls are only 1 month old, but they know when I come in the coop with that round silver pan, they're in for a treat. They come a runnin' like nobody's business, peeping like crazy till I put that pan down, still peeping like crazy while they're in the middle of a feeding frenzy. I keep trying to tell them that it's not polite to peep with your mouth full, but they just won't listen!
