I think Catherine is better, too! She's been eating much more and her poop had gone back to normal. I'm not sure if it was the fluids from the vet, the antibiotics, or the extra rest indoors, but she's made so much progress.
Thanks for the support! I'm so glad this message board is here!
Scratch that. It's not the crop. I went home at lunch to check on her and the lump was gone. Still, as an extra precaution I gave her some olive oil soaked bread, which she seemed to like, and she ate a few pieces.
I did connect her movable quarantine coop to the entrance to the vegetable...
Sara,
I think Catherine is doing better. She spent some time in my vegetable garden chewing on weeds and pea flowers. She walked around for a whole 10 minutes before flopping down to rest. Her poop looks more normal, although it's smaller than usual due to the small amounts she is eating...
Sara9889, how's Harriet doing?
Catherine looked a lot more alert after her trip to the vet and ate quite a bit last night. However, this morning she was back to being weak and tired and just picked at her food.
I've been watching the other chickens to see if there are any symptoms, and I'm a...
Thanks for all the replies. I really, really appreciate the time everyone has taken to give me advice.
So, I took her to the avian vet this morning. The veterinarian confirmed that she does indeed have diarrhea and took a stool sample. It was negative for parasites. Her crop and egg tract...
Holy crap, that is useful!
I guess the closest match is the bottom left photo of the ceacal grouping. The diarrhea is very liquid, though, no solids.
She's sleeping right now on a roost, which I suppose is a good sign.
I have a 1 year old Rhode Island Red who has been listless and mostly uninterested in eating and drinking.
I noticed that she was sitting down and napping during the day yesterday, which my birds never do alone. Today she appears weaker and she doesn't kick me as she usually does when I pick...
I last month I had a three week old pullet with a big head wound from an escaped older chicken. I used an antiseptic called blu-cote on the advice of other people on this board. It dyes the wound blue and disinfects it at the same time. I kept her with just one buddy for a few days and then...
I don't know if it's the spring or all the rain we've been getting, but my friendliest, sweetest Rhode Island Red has turned into a real monster. She used to peck my boots occasionally if she wanted something, but now she constantly nips my legs above the boots and and pecks my hands when I'm...
This is short notice, but there is a meeting today to talk about the ordinances with other chicken owners and attempt to rewrite them into a more chicken-friendly version.
Saturday February 27th at 305 Gist street, Pittsburgh 15219, starting at 2:00.
Today I went outside to check my Rhode Island Reds and instead of three running up to greet me I only saw two. The third one finally stuck her head out of her hiding place in a crevice under our back stairs once I started giving out treats. I never would have found her first egg without seeing...
I have three Rhode Island Reds who are almost at 24 weeks and no signs of eggs yet. Two have had their combs grown in for at least a month, and my third one is a slow developer (but a sweetie). They've been eating eggshell for at least six weeks and I've scoured our tiny backyard for rogue...
