My Pekins are absolutely crazy about melon rinds; I need to chop them up quite small. They seem to go for all fruit peels & cores. Tomatoes are a definite winner as well, though
Hi Aart,
Thanks for that! That's very helpful, and it explains why we had some many double-yolkers when they first started laying. They're a bit more rare now..
This one's not all that weird, but when i first started getting them, I thought my chickens were getting too much calcium (we started to supplement after having some very thin-shelled eggs). However, I learned online that it's just a normal variation, and nothing to worry about.
Ok, I could probably google this, or find the answer here somewhere. But it seems more fun to ask you, and then I also get to show this picture :) Does anyone know if all chickens occasionally lay a double-yolk egg? Or do they come from specific chickens/breeds?
Hi Nancy.
Thanks for that! That sound really bad - we are you located, if I might ask?
Bad water is sooo damaging to our health and properties. You can spend a fortune here in Egypt on replacing water pumps, tanks and on all plumbing and equipment, likes washing machines..

From what I have read quail do not perch, they basically nest on the ground, but flying has to come natural to them. Maybe I will let them out on a regular basis to fly around my screened in porch area That should give them enough exercise.
From what I've seen so far, they don't perch at all...
I like our nesting boxes - I can't take credit for them, because they were built by the owner of the property we're renting - because you can collect the eggs without having to enter the run. In our case that involves going through the duck run to get to the chicken run..
Hi Leyla,
Thanks for that warning - I have been giving them our tap water, but I'll make a point of switching to fresh well water. Our water situation is pretty complicated with all the different 'grades' of water out here. Whenever my family (from Holland) come to visit, I need to write them...
Hi there,
We've got 17 quail in our desert climate in Dahab, Egypt. We only purchased them last December, so we're yet to find out how they will handle the summer heat. Ours our outside, and, in anticipation of summer, we've built them a new pen in the shade, directly on the ground, so they...
Hi Thomas,
Good question! I've been thinking about that. I grow some flowers in pots, and I can clearly see a residue of salt on the soil there. I don't really see this in our veg garden, but I noticed my Swiss Chard being salty when I tasted it straight from the plant recently. I'm not sure...
Hello everyone,
I finally decided to start making my own profile, after having enjoyed browsing the BYC forums and info for a while now.
We live in Dahab, Egypt, by the Red Sea, and started late last year with raising our own poultry. Our first purchase consisted of a few chickens and a...
