    Can anyone sex my chicks?

These 3 chicks are about 6 weeks old. Mixed breed. Can anyone tell me what sex they are?

Stressful start with first time flock

Search this forum for posts about brooding chicks outside. I have done this the last 3 sets of chicks I’ve had...one of them even in the fall where night time temps were in the 40s...with nothing more than a standard heating pad in the brooder (look for posts about mama heating pad). The chicks...

Please help! Baby chick is lame.

I gave her vitamin b and polyvisol 3 times yesterday and once this morning. I never saw any improvement, and when I went out to check on her around lunchtime today and give her her next dose she was dead. It is sad that I couldn’t help her and I still wonder what went wrong. All the other chicks...

Please help! Baby chick is lame.

This morning the chick was laying on her back with legs splayed and her neck twisted so that her head was upright. I gave her some iron free polyvisol and separated her from the rest of the flock with her own food (with vitamin b added) and water. I haven’t been able to get her to eat or drink...

Please help! Baby chick is lame.

I don’t think it is crippled though. It has been fine up until today.

Please help! Baby chick is lame.

That is a good thought. They have Purina start and grow in the chick feeder but I did put a flock grazer block out for the big hens this past weekend and I’ve seen the chicks eating on that quite a bit. Maybe I need to close it in the brooder with only access to the chick food and water.

Please help! Baby chick is lame.

I have 3 chickens hatched by a broody hen 2 weeks ago. Today when I got home one was sort of lame. No signs of injury. Any idea what is going on??

Can anyone identify the breed of this rooster?

I would say you are likely correct that he is a mix. I got him at 1 week old from a lady that had over 200 free range chickens just breeding openly. I just wondered what kind of mix. Here is a closer up photo of his comb and a photo of him as a baby.

    Help with Sick Hen, Please!

Unfortunately she didn't make it. We took the stool sample in and had it tested. The vet said it was positive for coccidiosis, but there weren't THAT many coccidia present. I held her and gently opened her beak while my wife put some of the Corid solution in using a syringe, and she instantly...

    Help with Sick Hen, Please!

Everyone, thanks for all the replies. I took a stool sample to the vet and it tested positive for coccidiosis. I bought some corid to treat the flock so they don’t get sick also, but I’m looking for advice on treating my sick hen that is no longer eating or drinking. Also, since I’m treating the...

    Help with Sick Hen, Please!

How can you tell if she is egg bound? I felt around on her vent and didn't feel anything, but I don't know what I'm doing. I have 8 other hens, a rooster, and 13 one month old chicks that I'm brooding in a separate pen inside the coop, and no one else seems sick.

    Help with Sick Hen, Please!

Please help! On Wednesday evening I went to the coop and found my Buff Orpington just sitting on the floor not moving. I picked her up and she still didn't move. I put her on the roost and she sat perfectly still with her eyes closed and her head kind of bobbing. This morning she was sitting...

    White Black Jack

No, I went ahead and used the 57 (found it at Lowe’s) and I’m loving it.

    Question about raising chicks outdoors

Thanks, Blooie. I actually have a bag of those vertical nipples. I’ll see if I can come up with a container and make them something today. Everyone survived the first night, so I think this will work out well. This site is a great resource.

    PDZ in the brooder

Is it ok to use Sweet PDZ in the brooder instead of pine shavings or some other bedding? I use it in my poop boards and it makes cleanup super easy, so I thought it would make a great bedding for a brooder, but I’m pretty new to all of this so I wanted to make sure there isn’t some reason not to...

    Question about raising chicks outdoors

I got some day old chicks yesterday. Today I built a brooder pen inside my coop and moved them outside. I just wanted to check with the smart people here and make sure I wasn’t making a big mistake. Here are some pictures of my coop and the new brooder pen. Let me know what you guys think. I...

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

Thanks, Crooked Chicken! The hoops in the run were made out of flexible PVC. Not the prettiest run I’ve seen but it was the cheapest way I found to make a really large run. I put some more pictures and links to all the materials I used here...

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

You can add me to the list of “Poop Board Converts”! I just moved my girls to their new coop on Thursday, and after 3 nights I can tell you that I love the idea I stole from this thread. Takes about 5 minutes a day to clean the poop off the tray with a litter scoop and it is gone from my coop...
