thoughts on this TSC brooder situation?

I feel like it meant no more than 20 at any age - the heat plate isn’t big enough for more than that. It doesn’t cover the entire floor of the brooder - I’m pretty sure it isn’t much larger than a Brinsea radiant heater we had that was for twenty. And honestly, I feel like that brooder is way...

thoughts on this TSC brooder situation?

I’m fortunate to know at least two local TSC’s have good employees that treat the animals well. The problem is that you can’t count on that at all stores. I was thinking about it last night and I realized something. The brooder they were selling said the maximum was twenty chicks up to six...

thoughts on this TSC brooder situation?

More money per square foot. Before when they used stock tanks they could only get four to six different breeds/species in the area, and they lost money on bedding. Now they can have a different breed or species in each box. I saw one local store selling turkeys the other day. I’ve never seen...

thoughts on this TSC brooder situation?

The heater is way too far up. My husband and I were looking at where they’re selling those brooders now, and my thought is that it would be handy, but that dang heat plate would need to be lowered or supplemented. From what I’ve seen, once the stock gets too low, the poor babies can’t get warm...

    Dutch Hookbill Hatch!

Good to know. The only other place I know that sells them is Apricot Valley, but they’re in Canada and last I saw they could only ship while they visited the US. They have an Etsy store though with cute Runner t-shirts though.

    Niacin question! Help please!

You’re ok! First - what feed are you giving them? If the ducklings are on a waterfowl/all flock starter they should be ok without supplementation in the first place. If they’re on meat bird or chick starter, then they would need the extra niacin. As for the amount you’ve been putting in, you...

Is this a olive egger pullet

That comb looks awfully small, so I’d lean pullet too. My first setting of chicken eggs was a bunch of EEs, and I pretty reliably guessed sex based on the size of their feet and combs at about that age. As for egg color, that’s tricky. My EEs had EE, RIR, and Gold Sex Link moms with an EE Roo...

New to Turkeys - Why are poults so cute??? Also, serious questions.

Gotcha. No more petting the babies until they’re a bit older. Thank you so much!

    Roosters need a new home!.

That’s perfectly ok! I understand completely!

New to Turkeys - Why are poults so cute??? Also, serious questions.

Thank you! If I don’t imprint them, will they still be relatively friendly and not become skittish? I have young children, so I think I’d like to avoid encouraging possible aggressive behavior from a tom at all costs. Right now the poults are in a brooder close to the house, and we check up on...

    Roosters need a new home!.

Ok, would you be willing to meet in Anderson? We’re actually about the same distance away, but I figured that meeting in that area would be half way to you. Since the faverolles are buddies, I’d be happy to take the Wynadotte instead.

    Roosters need a new home!.

How far are you out from Anderson, SC? More importantly, what‘re the faverolles’ temperaments like? Are the roos you’re trying to rehome generally friendly to humans? If the roos are sweethearts with humans and you’re not too far from the Anderson/Greenville area, I could arrange to take one.

    Dutch Hookbill Hatch!

I have wanted to get my grubby paws on Hookbills for years! Consider me a customer if this works out for you! Fingers crossed that your hatch goes well! Can’t wait to see the babies!

New to Turkeys - Why are poults so cute??? Also, serious questions.

We decided to experiment with poults this year - we’ve raised ducks for three years and chickens for two. We got 15 turkeys - 6 Midget Whites, 4 Blacks, and 5 Royal Palms. I am already charmed by them, the cute little boogers, and I’m excited to have them around the yard. But I have a couple...

    Why wasn't I warned! 3 🤣

We got our first ducks during my first pregnancy, and my OB was concerned about the weird three-slash cuts in my arms! But snuggling babies was worth it!

    Duck hatcheries?

Murray McMurray has a minimum of two for ducklings, but shipping is what gets you. I think our order for two Saxonys ended up being $70. I’d check your local Tractor Supply. Most of em have ducklings, you just won’t get to choose the breed or sex. If you want sexed ducklings or a specific breed...

    South Carolina

@Tigerkity your four Horsemen look like my little Easter Egger chicks. :) @Roli I don’t know about Horry, but I’d assume the county’s official website would have info or someone to contact. Try contacting the zoning office. Although I’d assume Horry isn’t that different from Saluda - if...

Can I house drakes and females together?

Definitely make sure you don’t have too many males. They also may not fight - my extra Ancona drakes just started ganging up on females rather than fighting for them.

    About to try hatching Muscovies

If the meat bird crumble company doesn’t get back to you, I’d add the brewers yeast. I used Purina Flock Raiser but went ahead and added yeast anyway. And if you’re worried about too much protein you can cut the food with rolled oats to help cut how much protein they’re getting.
