Anyone need a good broody in Southern California?

Hello! I have a 3.5 year old buff bantam cochin who is a perma broody. She is a great mother and has hatched and raised three bunches of chicks so far with no issues. She is not a mean broody to people or other chickens. She tends to be a lower down on the totem pole girl. Quiet, used to free...

    Black Bantam Cochin Hen

I need to thin my flock so I am offering for sale a 1.5 year old Black Bantam Cochin hen. She was hatched by one of my other chickens and has been raised 100% organically, with other chickens, with dogs and is good with people. She is a very quiet hen, not even singing the traditional egg song...

Awwwww, your mama knows you so well The only reason I go to Blacksmiths corner is because the last two times I went to get organic feed at Midway City they were sold out. I am totally going to check out Kruse's Feed....they even have organic rabbit pellets cheaper than anywhere else I have found.

I have been getting my organic feed at Blacksmiths corner, but think I am going to be changing now. All my rabbit and misc supplies and hay I get at Midway City feed.

Leanne, Thanks for the tip on Kruses Feed! Do your girls eat pellets? I want to switch mine to the soy free but not sure how they will handle going from the crumbles to the pellets. Sue

Just had first hawk attack :(

Thanks Leochickenmama! I am sorry you recently went through the same thing. I grew up in Jersey and remember seeing some pretty big hawks. Sadly, I am not allowed roosters where I live....I guess the babies are stuck in the pen until they mature. All of my chickens are still cowering under the...

Just had first hawk attack :(

I have had chickens for a little over a year and just lost my first to a hawk. I had a cat attack a few months ago, but this is the first attack I have witnessed. I have bantam cochins that free range in the backyard all day since I work from home and keep an eye on them. One of my bantams has 6...

Update: I just went out to lock up the coop for the night and heard very faint peeping noises. I went over to the nest box area and sure enough it was coming from there.....lifted up mama hen and there are FOUR CHICKS!!!!!! There are 3 more eggs so maybe I will even get more, but I feel darn...

Darn it!!!!!! She was on the wrong nest today!

Thanks for the boost everyone! I am still holding onto hope. The original hatch date is the 18th so I will not be in suspense for too long. I am going outside to check and make sure she is on the right nest a few times a day and tonight will figure out some way to barricade her in the correct...

Darn it!!!!!! She was on the wrong nest today!

Thanks Dennis! At least winter hatching/chicks is no big deal for us in our climate peafowlmom: I have three bantam cochins (two buff, 1 black frizzle) and a 4 week old dark brahma pullet ( I hope ) The eggs I bought are for blue/black bantam cochins. I really want some splash cochin bantams...

Darn it!!!!!! She was on the wrong nest today!

Thanks! I am just going to hope for the best, and if the eggs are no longer viable then there is still plenty of time to hatch out more chicks so that they will be laying age by this summer. I just have chick fever right now I guess
