    18 Barred Rocks

As an update, we got an additional 16 Barred Rocks with a few Dominiques with them. We lost 6 of the Rocks the first night. We currently have 35 chicks. They are enjoying the coop and hopefully we won't loose any more. One more shipment to TSC then it will have to wait till next year. Total cost...

    18 Barred Rocks

Forgive me I meant featured breed. Basically each week they get in red pullets and straight run "featured" breed. They are never sure which breed they receive until they get there.

    18 Barred Rocks

Straight run unfortunately. My TSC never sexes any of their "specialty" breeds. We are hoping that we get at least half female. The funniest thing is that my 2 week old red pullets were terrified of the new Rocks. They got over it overnight thankfully.

    18 Barred Rocks

So I am lucky enough to walk into my local Tractor Supply today when they just got a shipment of chicks in. I bought the lot of em. We had always planned to get Barred Rocks as soon as possible and now we do.

Would this work for 20 chickens if converted?

I bought an Arrow 10'x8'x6.5' from Lowe's and think it is good enough to house 20 chickens. I don't know what kind of budget you have but the 10'x8' was only 298 plus tax. The floor frame came with it and if you lay down plywood and linoleum it will only add about 100 dollars to total costs...

    They dont love me.

Well it really depends on the chicks more than how you try to do with them. Obviously if you hold them wrong or try to pick them up in a way that they instinctively do not like then they won't respond well. When my chicks just hatched they loved to be held and often fell asleep in your arms...

Official BYC Poll - How Many Square Feet Per Chicken?

Ten foot by Eight foot coop for twenty four = 3.3 sq feet per Free range space is roughly 8000 sq feet = 333.3 sq feet per bird. Edited due to chicken math

just hatched some chicks! First timer in need of advice..

Crushed Granite for grit. I'm unsure on how much the chick will grow but I assume that it will grow to the same size as a normal chicken of that breed.

Sleeping More On A Cooler Day?

I would think that if there were a reason it would be boredom. I noticed a general lack of activity in the brooder after a few days of being in it myself. If there is an affinity to the weather...I have no clue

    Let's be honest folks!!!

Forgive me, I wasn't directing that to you. Was just chiming in on the "junk" love.

    Let's be honest folks!!!

Junk? You mean already paid for materials on hand? Junk is the single best cost saving method I know of. I wish someone around here had "junk" wheelbarrows so I can salvage the wheels. Heck, the metal could be a nice little bird bath or duck pond if you drill the bottom and attach a valve to...

    Let's be honest folks!!!

I have been planning my chicken coop for two years. I can't count that as time since I had very little plans to build it so much as it was an intellectual "what-if". I got chickens March 14th. Since then, I have been planning on building a ten foot by 5 foot tractor. Today I decided to stop...

Something for the chicks to play with?

I have had my chicks outside every day since day two. This is my "playtime" with them as they go exploring, scratching and catching bugs. I have yet to try to put anything into the brooder as a toy, but I also plan to put my chicks into their coop by the time they are two weeks old. We've had...

Best fencing for a combined garden/chicken run?

Standard deer fencing being seven and a half foot? Personally, I'd use a mix of both if I had that kind of money to spend. If I were to make a choice of one or the other, hardware cloth. You have two foot by fifty foot rolls just have 4 rolls to make your eight feet. Use your standard metal...

How Soon Do You Name Your Chicks?

I have six pullets. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday and Cruella Cruella will bring us 101 dalmatian puppies and then be eaten. Since I won't know how long that will take, we'll eat some day some time...later.

I've always heard of putting it in a separate dish.

just hatched some chicks! First timer in need of advice..

I've simply held them and "played" with them outside every day. Today was stormy, so instead I put newspaper down on the carpet and "played" inside with them. I personally don't recommend any treat at a young age simply because you have to introduce grit if you do. As pets, I can't tell you...

First baby chicks ever! Advice welcome.

Each person might tell you different but I would go with the flow, minimal interference. What you have is enough.
