    When to Rehome Cockerel

One of my three chicks turned out to be a male. I can’t keep a rooster in town, but I have a friend who will take him. They are 7 weeks old now, and still inside because the nights are still getting down to 40 degrees sometimes. I’m assuming he’ll be quarantined at his new home, and I don’t want...

    Solo Nail Trimming

Mine free range too but some of them definitely need a trim.

    Went to buy chicken feed.

Left with these babies. One Australorp, one Buff Orpington, and one brown leghorn. This was an impulse buy, but don’t worry, they aren’t my first chickens (although I’d still consider myself a newbie) The australorp was banded, so she’s a female. The other two were straight run so I hope they...

    Solo Nail Trimming

Any advice. Everything I’ve seen is about two people doing it. Surely it can be done alone.

    DIY windbreak

That’s a great idea! Cedar fence panels are my friend! I used them for raised beds last summer.

    DIY windbreak

Of course they have a coop.

    DIY windbreak

Any suggestions for a quick windbreak to put by my door for my chickens? They hang out by my patio door all day, for the heat escaping the house maybe? It’s 18 degrees here and I feel bad. Maybe if they had something to block the wind they’d be warmer.

    Quarter-sized egg

Is it normal to get a really small egg every once in a while? She’s been laying since November. It’s one of my white leghorns. Edit: they are receiving supplemental lighting, if that makes a difference.

    ID my chicks!

BTW, you were right. The red are female also.

    How much chicken scratch?

It's gotten cold here, so I've started giving my girls chicken scratch at night, in addition to their regular food. How much should I give them? Should I give it to them in the mornings too?

They’re trying to make me feel bad

When mine stare at me when I’m eating and it’s chicken I tell them “It’s turkey!!”

They’re trying to make me feel bad

Its the first snow of the year. They finally left their coop but they’ve been camped out by my door. Poor girls. One of my two leghorns laid their first egg today too!

    Temporarily Housing Chickens in Garage

They’re 21 weeks old. I have six of them. Any ideas how to make a temporary partition cheaply and not too time consuming? It’s not too cold yet, but it will be soon so wanted to winterize their coop as quickly as I can.

    Temporarily Housing Chickens in Garage

I’m not sure where to put this thread, sorry. I read one way to make sure your coop doesn’t get too cold is to paint the wood so it doesn’t absorb moisture. My coop does seem to get very damp, I’m trying to fix it. Anyway, obviously the chickens can’t be in there for a couple days. How would I...

    Holding chickens

Well, that’s why I posted this, described her reaction and posted a picture. I don’t know if she’s comfortable.

    Holding chickens

No, they’re only 7 weeks old. Unless they were older than they said when I got them.

    Holding chickens

One of my white leghorns (maybe both, I can’t tell them apart) lets me hold her and pet her. She doesn’t hold still to be picked up, but once I have her in a comfortable position she seems to relax. I think. I make sure her feet aren’t trapped because I don’t want to force my affections on her...

Is this a chicken instinct? Or something else?

oops, I meant it *wasn’t late enough for nocturnal predators in my original post. I fixed it.

Is this a chicken instinct? Or something else?

Thanks. I was pretty proud of them for coming when I called them.

Is this a chicken instinct? Or something else?

I moved my chicken brooder to the chicken coop and let them play in their chicken yard during the day. I have a video baby monitor out there so I can make sure they’re okay at night. They’re five weeks old. Last night, I was outside, they were too because I was waiting until the coop cooled off...
