Sorry to hear about this. The same thing happened to us. We had a stray kill 3 of our hens but over the next 3 days the other 3 came back. I was surprised that they came back after that long but they will. Good luck!

skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

I just came across your thread. I had the same thing happen to my buff orp rooster last fall. He was attacked by a dog. He didn't make it but I am so glad Holly is doing okay. I love this site because people know so much and are so much help to each other.

Should feed stores etc... even sell chicks????

I agree with all the comments about children handlig chicks. The 2 stores that I have got my chickens from don't allow children to pick up chicks. I know some do, but is is the same with the kids I have taught in school and currently work with in a library, they haven't been taught anything at...

What kind of chicken is this?

No she (we hope) doesn't have black skin. Could she still be a silkie mix? We have had our original flock for a year now. We lost 1 barred rock and a buff orp to a stray dog and our white crippled silkie this winter to unknown causes. That leaves us with a speckeled sussex, a barred rock, an EE...

What kind of chicken is this?

I was wondering if anyone knows what type of chicks these are. They were the last 2 out of 500 at the feed store and they guy wasn't sure what kind they were. I thought they were the same but one is all light yellow with yellow/orange legs and the other one is larger and has black markings on...

    Old and Rare Breeds

Thands for this info. I just got my first chickens last spring and love them! My biggest problem is that I live in Wyoming and am finding that chicken breeding and breeds aren't a big concern in my area. Could you inclule a list of breeders that actually sell some of these breeds? Maybe someone...

    Skin Ripped Off - Died

I am so sorry. Happened to us 2 weeks ago. 2 stray dogs let my 2 bassest hounds out of the outdoor kennel and the end result was I lost my buff orp rooster and one of my best barred rock laying hens. We tried for 2 days to save our rooster. All the skin on the back of his head and neck had been...

I feel kinda guilty about this...

This is so funny because the other day I gave mine left over chicken and noodles. My sister looked at me like I was nuts and asked me if I expected them to eat their own kind. They had no problem!

******ALL ABOARD! We're looking to start an EGG TRAIN!*******

This is a great idea! I personally feel that shipping live animals is not a good practice. I have realized that there aren't a whole lot of people selling chickens that I want in my area (Wyoming). Let me know how to sign up on the list!

Peeps - the runt who won't give up

I know how you feel. We hatched a baby chicks at school and one of them hatched with yolk that hadn't been absorbed. I cut it off because the others were pecking at it. I took her home that weekend with me and took her to a 4 star hotel we went to for my husbands pre deployment conference. I fed...

    Kids Chasing Chickens, Opinions?

I totally agree with all of you that say that the kids would get thier butt spanked for treating any animal badly. That said, maybe you should look at intent. My 3 year old knows he better not chase the chickens, but he loves to run beside them and thinks they are racing him. It brings him so...

Did Anyone Here Write The Book "Tillie Lays An Egg"?

That is sooo funny because my 3 year old is the same with that book! Half of our chickens are named after the ones in Tilley. Terri Goldson wrote the book and she has the most awsome site www.hencam.com. You can watch her chickens and goats. She also has a blog with amazing chicken info. I...

    How to tame chicks

Thanks for posting your feedback on this subject:cool:! I thought maybe it was just me that couldn't tame my chicks. We had one we kept in the house for weeks and she always wanted to be held, but as soon as we put her out in the pen she acts like she has never seen us or been held in her life.
