    Heerre Kitty kitty

We are getting even with the city folks. We attracted a cat to our country home, and it had 5 kittens which are 3 weeks now. These do not enter our house and live in my shop. Another stray adopted our porch in the meantime and is pregnant, very. Lying on concrete and all. We have a lot of...

You can tell we really like our chickens....

I will go first: A stranger stopped by our farm the other day impressed by our fine old barn. He looked at the chickens in the snow and said "why do you have all of these one-legged chickens?".... I looked at him straight in the eyes and said "Here, we really like our chickens, can't eat them...

    Eggsponential Chicken Math

Let's see, to get a colored egg basket and continue to propagate the breeds to do so....I will need a hundy birds. (May 2019) It's a lot of work to propagate a breed. Can't make sense to do it for 8 more laying hens of that breed.... (May 2020) So I think if the roosters and hens are willing...

    Escape! Happy Easter!

Soo...this morning after opening the coop, yours truly neglected to close the gate. About 20 of my chickens were all over the yard as I headed to the Jacuzzi. Changed my plans. Walking around the yard chasing chickens and looking for eggs at 59 years old on Easter morning. Pshaw. :D The...

    Next Step-Propagate

Ok, I have a big backyard and put 86 chickens in it so far. I have some Brinsea Incubators and plan on hatching from three of the breeds in the flock that I have bought enough of to form a rooster-hen ratio that will work. Unfortunately none of the three breeds I want to propagate ended up...

    Winter Chicks

I was wondering what success folks have had ordering and raising chicks. I am Midwest and winter temps occasionally get below 20F and sometimes below 10F (prolly 2 times a year) for short periods. I have a well insulated shop and a galvanized 6' oval stock tank as a brooder with heat lamp...

    Fertile Eggs Vs. Chicks??

So I have a flock, and it seems healthy with birds at 14, 18, and 22 weeks old. In the spring I want to add a few, and some 25-50 Rock Cornish perhaps. More than one batch over the spring is likely so we and our neighbor get 50 each for the freezer(s). What are the reasons I would want...

    Pond Fish for Chickens?

Has anyone fed a steady diet of pond fish (bass, bluegill, catfish) to chickens? How does it affect their behavior? Flavor of eggs or meat? Would you do anything more than throw the fish into the run like chopping etc.? Thanks for anything you can fill in.

    Pam Cooking Spray

OK, to keep the chickens off of our (their) galvanized poultry font, my chickspouse sprayed them with (the fonts) cooking spray (Pam). They were frightened, because they know the last time they encounter that spray will be in the frying pan.... I made her stop.

    BackYardChicken-BYC sounds like a chicken!

I cluck at my chickens to let them know I am around, and I sing "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" by Middle of the Road while I feed them. They know the difference. :) Then I noticed my shortcut bar icon is "BYC". BYC BYC BYC BYUUUK!. Does anyone else have a unique way of talking to the cluckers?

Shakey, Quivering 5 week old chicken

I have 27 5 week old chickens. Some have shaken or "rattled" their tails etc., but we have one, a buff orpington I think, that shakes and quivers. She likes the lamp and is nervous regardless. Any thoughts?

    Leaky Roof/Floor

If you have enough room (midwestern climate) are roof leaks necessarily bad? Can you put a collector pan under it and call it a "waterer"? What kind of problems would you anticipate? Thanks in advance!

Experiences with predators going through wood walls.

I have a large coop under construction in an old barn. The siding could be better, when a predator goes through such a wall, what is the most challenging wall that a common varmint has overcome in your observations/experiences? I am not worried about bears. :)

    How High

I have 27 assorted chicks including Leghorns, Dominiques, and others that are 4 weeks old now. My coop is not ready and they are outgrowing the brooder. I want to let them out during the day, how high will my fence need to be? As I understand they are now at the max for the brooder, and am...

    How to catch a chick!

OK, one of my 3 week old dominiques escaped and spent the night hiding in the shop where I am keeping the brooder. I left a bit of the lamp shining outside of the brooder and left a box, water, feed, and those white clover flowers the dominiques seem to love so much. Ideas? Open the door in...

    20%, 22%, 27% Protien in Chick Starter

This thread is @aart recommended as the originating thread was deviating. What do you suggest? I have sourced from a retail store a "Poultry and Game Bird Starter" and is labeled at 27%. Is this excessive? What would the effects be if so? It was about $16 for 50 lbs.

    1 month apart chicks

I have 27 3 week old chicks, and in 10 days am getting another batch the same size. Does anyone have advice/tips for combining the two groups? The coop is large enough and more.

    Heritage Farm Chicken

Hello all, I have recently moved to a family farm of 125 years. It has been furloughed for a few years since the last real "farmer" in the family died a few decades ago. I have taken it upon myself to restore an old hip-roofed barn of 1500 ft2, but larger animals are not for me so I will be...
