Nice...thanks! A friend said that he had a theory that the natural female instinct to "impress" a male would cause the hens to lay bigger and better eggs. When I was done gagging I had a good laugh, but he swear by it....
I did notice more feathers than usual lying around. Could be molting...
Hey everyone...My first 11 hens are just about to turn 1. I have been reading various posts about some concerns and questions I have, but I think it would be easier to ask this way:
What types of things should I be doing/looking for at this stage in their life? For example (sorry, I have been...
Sasquatch, mine are doing the EXACT same thing. I have 11, and I am getting about 6 eggs a day, where it used to be 9-10. This has been happening off and on over the winter.
I am basically thinking they are sick of the winter coop (in our barn) and are ready to get back out to their nicer...
O.k. so I am not losing my mind....I just got a 3 gallon waterer and my 11 ladies are attacking me when I arrive with refills. I had one fly straight up to my face and landing in the bucket I was carrying, and sucking it down as I carried her in the bucket.
I figured they had been spilling as...
Oh thanks...you're sweet!
We wrapped her up and put her in the barn. I kind of want to bury her and my husband is rolling his eyes at me
Where in NH are you btw?
Now I'm a little concerned because she was only 8 months old. What is the average life span?
I think she may have been the same chick who got pasted vents as a baby...if it is the same hen, she was always a little slow on the uptake and seemed to not thrive like the others.
Hmmmm
I posted earlier today about a sick chicken...Well she just slipped away. She hadn't eaten all day today and I just checked on her and she was gone.
We have 2 feet of snow on the ground...What should I do with her?
No sneezing etc. very quiet overall. She will walk, but only if "forced". Her comb is speckled white and gray - I wondered about frostbite.
We are in East Kingston.
Hi All - We had a cold spell and one of our girls did not get in out of the cold. I noticed she had been huddling away from the others for a few days but didn't think anything of it. Then my husband found her half frozen and tipped over. Her feet were frozen solid. I brought her in, warmed...
I am almost positive it is my rhode island reds that are laying...I have been checking the vents (sorry girls) and the R.IR.'s have all the signs of being ready...the others, not so much.
But I also suspect my golden comets- they have been doing the whole squatting thing and letting me actually...
Thanks everyone. I went out and spent about a whole day working on the coop and the run today - me and the girls had a long chat about the crazy eggs.
I have been giving them their own egg shells back to them, but I will have to add to that since it has been so erratic....I willgo get some...
Hi all....I started getting eggs last week...Woohoo! I was getting an egg a day....one day it would be a tiny egg, the next day a large egg. All of those alrge eggs have had double yolks. This seemed like maybe 2 different hens were laying? Or does eggs size vary from day to day?
Are the...
I couldn't believe it....The girls are 20 weeks old and I have been trying so hard NOT to look for eggs. I went out and found 4 of themost beautiful blobs lying in a dent in the straw! I started yelling and hollering so that everyone came running - they thought something was wrong.
It is the...

HI Everyone in New England! Woohoo...I stumbled on your posts while snooping around for guineas. Does your friend still have some? I would love to get 6-10 of them...I am in Southern New Hampshire.
