My Girls
They have no names. These were 4 hand me downs from a cousin. Soon I'll be getting rid of them..regifting..to make room...
My name is Jim and im 20 miles west of the Capitol of the world.. Cleveland OH. Why they claim that is beyond me since other cities play better music.Rock~n~Roll
Enough of that though. Im a 43 yr old disabled truck driver with MS. Since I'm home all the time I decided why not build a coop and...
Thanks!
Shes in a big cage now in the run. Just standing there. She has food and water but doesnt seem interested in it right now but she has pecked at the water melon we gave her. At night now we have a smaller pet carrier to put her in, inside the coop.
Yeah, Im right up 77 from you to the...
We've got 3 Golden Buffs and 3 Barred Rock (30 weeks old) that have been together since birth. The Barred Rock seem to be the dominate ones, pecking at the Buff's when water melon..corn cobs etc are thrown in the coop but nothing real aggressiveness happens.
Now last night we bring home 1...
We have a sweet corn grower in town thats allowed us to go through the fields after they have picked through it.
There is still alot of editable corn left, some not as pretty as others.
We send the spent ears out to the chickens..ones we ate and ones we have cut off the cob for freezing. Others...
Right now, the girls go into the coop to dust with the wood shavings inside.
I have access to alot of spent wood ash, and sandy garden dirt, but to place a box in the open run with the ash and or dirt in it, my concern is after a rain would they still be able to use it? And since their used to...
We got our first egg yesterday, 3 days shy of their 19 week hatch day.
Only thing, the hen that laid it didn't use either nesting box. And today's egg was a soft shell.
Now, will they eventually start using the box's? And Im assuming egg size will increase as they mature, right?
Also, will the...

Where would I find plans on this plucker?...like pulley sizes and how is the pvc attached to the rod?
I have one I made thats mounted in a drill. Processing 6 birds the thing loosened up 3 times...plus getting the speed right was hard. Its only about 8" long and rows of two fingers.
The...
Our 6, 3 Barred Rocks and 3 Golden Buffs will be 5 weeks old on Monday.
We have moved the coop to the unheated garage, covered it in clear plastic and zip tied an electric heater to the highest point inside.
The last time we checked it was 40 degrees inside the open part of the coop 3 hours...

Try em.. you wont be disappointed.
Plucking isnt that difficult, plus the skin is mighty tasty if seasoned and roasted just right. I cant wait to try a whole bird in the smoker and grill.
We just roasted one tonight.
Birds sat in the fridge for 3 days to age...
Split the bird, used the back bone for a stock for gravy.
Oven set at 400 degrees, buttered. salt and peppered the bird and baked for 45 mins... it was the BEST chicken I ever had!! Im not much for white meat, but he...
Everything went pretty smooth except the plucking.
The birds were exactly 7 weeks old...made a killing cone from a old traffic cone (which worked fine)
Sliced the veins in their neck while holding their head till they went limp.
Let em bleed out for 5 minutes, then scald in 140 degree water...
The two breeds were getting are Golden Buff, their cold tolerant. Barred Plymouth Rock which they are very cold hardy.
The coop isnt insulated at all. It's a 4x8 area with a coop built in half of it.
The chicks will be in a brooder box in the house under a heat lamp till they feather, which I...
Nov 16th were getting 6 chicks.. Jan 10 they will be 8 weeks old and ready to go outside.
Is it a good idea if I move the coop into the garage to keep the young chickens out of the harsh winter draft and snow?
I was thinking of supplementing their light with a shop light hanging over the open...
The 4 chickens are over 35 weeks old...they were givin to me a month ago... Is this nesting box to low? I haven't seen an egg yet!
Would it help to build a shelf and raise that box?
I have two box's for 6 chickens and thought of getting rid of one of em.
Thanks!
Heres the story.
I have 4 hens I received from a cousin who is needing to thin his flock.
They were used to 5 acres to run around on with virtually no human interacting. Their now in a 4x8 area with a coop built above it and a 25' length of fence for added room to run around it.
All he could...
