    Game dogs

We've been looking into getting a dog for about a year now, perusing various breeds and we've come to the conclusion that a german shorthaired pointer would be a great fit for our family, our property size (2 acres) and our children's temperaments/size. All that aside, my chickens are free range...

    Where did you go?

Ever count your chickens when they come back in for the night and you're missing one? You look all over, give up, shut the coop and in the morning, he/she is back? Lol. This happens to me all the time.......don't know if I'm miscounting or they found a seriously small and weird place in the coop...

    Heart attack times two

First year for broilers. I've always had dual purpose and never lost a chick before. I followed the 24/7 feed for 2 wks advice (they are a week and a half) but am going to put the rest on an immediate restriction diet. Anyone had experience with them having heart attacks that early on? I'm also...

    Cornish Cross

Boy howdy will I never again buy dual purpose birds to use for meat. After processing 3 rounds of them and now seeing what I get with less money and time with the crosses, I'll never go back. Just got the Cornish crosses on Friday and they are enormous! And on a side note, decided to try a rhode...

    *&@#% Raccoon

Woke up to the girls carrying on and a dead hen with entrails exposed inside the coop. The thing is, I would immediately get on top of making it raccoon proof if I could figure out how it got in there. I've got field fence on the run and chicken wire up the sides with no gaps that I can see. Any...

SAHM going back to work after 10 years, ahhhh!

I decided that it was time to go back to work (now that my youngest is going to kindergarten in August) and applied to do CNA training for a local retirement/nursing home. This all took place a month and a half ago. I was told to come back/call mutliple times and have never gotten confirmation...

    The lowest of the low

One of my girls that's on the bottom of the order is just having a horrible time. The others have picked this last week to just about put the final nail in her coffin. They won't let her have any food, mob her and chased her into a crevice that I had to un-nail just to get her out of. She's...

    4-h first year for chickens

My 10 year old is showing for the first time and as we haven't done any of the workshops yet, it'd be nice to know what to expect! Are we going to be able to use any of our existing chickens (is there a division for chickens older than pullets?) We've got 2, 2 year old easter eggers and 10 year...

    blended families

I've never posted anything personal before so here goes. My oldest is fathered by someone I dated for many years but never married. We split unamicably at first but have worked really hard to not just be amicable but to be friends as well. Well, it's gone pretty well until recently. Our son has...

    Retiring in Idaho

My husband and I are both a long way off from retirement but are trying to educate ourselves on where we'd like to end up! We're both lifelong residents of IN but think Idaho would meet both of our desires! Anyone who lives there and wants to tell us a bit about it from personal experience would...

    Cooked my first this morning!

I cut two breasts up into bite size chunks, made an orange glaze and baked it and served it with toothpicks as an appetizer. I was very pleased with it and can't wait to roast a whole one next year. My kids didn't even mind that they were former "pets", it tasted so good....

Consumer reports article on salmonella in store bought birds

Just got an article from my dad about percentages of salmonella and campylobacter in store bought brands of all varieties (antibiotic fed, free range etc....). It looks like air chilling methods have the least contamination. Thought it might be of interest to those of us who raise meat birds for...

    Growing up on a farm

Curious as to how many of you grew up rurally, rurally on a farm or in town? I grew up on a crop production farm with sheep.

Broilers vs dual purpose for meat

This was my second batch of dual purpose to process and I've found the only way to really get them tender is to slow cook them. I don't have any desire to brine as it just seems like it would be so salty (correct me if I'm wrong). For those who only raise broilers (or those who have eaten both)...

    ducks vs chickens

Did my first ducks today and was suprised at how similar some of the process was and how different some of the parts were (spleen for instance). The ducks were more rewarding in the size making up for all the work but oddly enough killing them was a little more upsetting than the chickens.

    requirements for owning chickens

There have been a few posts talking about culling, management, feeding that have really sparked anger and decidedly different ideas about what's "right and wrong". What would you as a chicken owner like to see as knowledge/habitat requirements for anyone wanting chickens?

If you buy meat from the store, how the heck do you think it got there

Ugggh. A woman at my youngest son's preschool asked me why I keep chickens and I explained that we keep some for eggs and others for meat. "why would you kill them?" "why don't you just go to payless?" "YOu mean the cute little fuzzy chicks?" yes lady, I mean chicks that you see in the feed...

    Invasion of monster ducks

O.k, got my day old pekins (along with day old wyandottes) last Tuesday and you can practically watch them get bigger;) The chicks are using them as mommy surragates because of the size difference......

    ducks/chicks together

My 15 wyandottes and 2 pekins are 3 days old now and so far are doing fine together but as the ducks get messier, I may relocate them.......but they had their first swim in the bath today and LOVED it!!!! It was quite possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen. Can't wait 'til they're bigger and...
