This is Scratch, the One Who Started It All. It was a boring summer and my husband happened upon a craigslist ad for a hen needing a home. She'd been rescued from the pound and rehabbed but didn't like her current family's dog.
We realized we couldn't have just one lonely hen and soon...
My little bantam girl has that sickness where she's congested and her eye is bubbling. She's been that way for a while (maybe a week), sorry to say, before I was able to get her the meds. She's had one dose yesterday and one dose today, 1/4 cc IM. She's not looking any better yet. She sounds...
Guess what? Not sick - broody! I finally noticed that she gets up once a day to eat/drink/dust and when I open the little coop to check on her, she makes broody noises at me, but what really gave it away was the noise she made at my husband.
Yep, broody! Thank heavens since we're dealing with...
I'm so glad that your surgery was successful and you had a happy ending. I'm concerned that she's back in the hospital cage again...keep an eye on her for the next egg! (duh, I know)
I had a RIR who went eggbound on her first egg and she didn't make it. The story is very similar to yours but the...
So is it a Marans and a Penedesenca? I'm confused...
We also just like the color...not planning on winning any awards these birds or eggs Makes for a pretty basket.
Well, I guess the color was off in the photo because lookie what I got today!
She's ridiculously gold on her neck and head, like metallic gold. Yellow, buttery, sparkly gold. Now I get to wait to see if the other Penedesenca will lay!
Yep, nearly the whole flock has the dry pox. This is what I understand and how I will be "treating" from what I have read:
-treat open wounds (only one is that bad) with iodine or blu kote
-supplement with AviaCharge - what is the non-McMurray name for that?
-eliminate/spray for mosquitoes
We...
I only have one customer at the moment and she pays me $5, but I (used to) give her half a dozen extra when I had them. Boy, do I have them now!
I'm just outside of L.A.
One of our hens is sick and I can't figure out what is going on to be able to treat her. Right now she's in a cage in the garage.
-age unknown.
-bantam OEG
-have been fighting scaly leg mites with vaseline, never completely gone away but has definitely improved
-has been laying shell-less eggs...
I'm still not sure what this girl is, but with the white legs, I'm hoping she's a Marans. She just doesn't have the coloring that I've seen in any pics of Marans and I'm starting to get concerned. (I've had a lot of chicks from my sexed runs turn out to be roos ) I'm also getting excited though...
I have a 16-week old Penedesenca who crowed for the first time this morning! That was crazy. I've also heard a one-week old attempt to crow and another cockerel started at about 5-6 weeks...so I'd say it varies
Phew! I'm not crazy after all? At least not about this...
Mr. Cocky Cockerel was the first to hatch and is the biggest. He's an Ameraucana with beautiful slate green legs.
I'll try to get some video tomorrow. I've only seen him do it once, when they were really antsy to be let out of the...
A few days ago my husband told me that our week old chick - who is obviously a rooster anyway - attempt to crow! I told him he was on crack and that it was impossible.
Today when everyone wanted out of the dog crate and I wasn't letting them out, the little cockerel looked right at me and...
She has four toes on one foot, and five on the other.
I have a black showgirl who had five toes on one foot and four on the other. Is this a silkie trait or something random or what?
Thanks for the info! I agree that the third is a black rosecomb. I'm interested to see what you think the red one is. I think it's an Ameraucana mix with something red, obviously
The Sebright and Showgirl are my favorites. The Sebright is so tiny that it reminds me of one of those fake yellow...
The black one on the top far right and the naked neck - who I found out is really a showgirl? naked neck and silkie mix? have feathered legs. The first two have slate green legs.
How do you know the one is a sebright?
