Silkie with eye infection/blindness. Coryza or....?

    1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Silkie hatched in March. Becoming quickly emaciated. 2) What is the behavior, exactly. I originally found her 2 weeks ago, lost and disoriented instead of in the coop with the rest...

We may be having chicken soup for dinner...

Quote: I agree. I'd cull him. Not entirely unlike a dog that bites...it's not something that can have "do over" option when it comes to a child.

What's the most "comfortable" flock size for 1 person to care for?

Yep, what she said Make sure your coop is safe from predators and your need for a rooster is moot. I have 13 hens, and 4 of them were not tame adults when I acquired them...but they still come running when it's treat time Not as friendly as my red stars that I raised from chicks though...

Duck Egg Duck Egg Duck Egg Yay!!!!!!

Eat it It amazes me how nasty those ducks can make their eggs-sometimes mine are *really* filthy and it takes some scrubbing to get them clean!

    Soft Shelled eggs...repeatedly.

I know this is a topic that is addressed over and over-so I apologize. I have 1 out of 10 hens that has been laying soft shelled eggs for MONTHS now-I think it started last fall. She drops eggs semi regularly from her roost, and will also set in a nesting box and not produce an egg. I know...

    Quarantine Eggs?

Ok thanks I was thinking 2 weeks. Here's the strange story: A friend of mine lives in town and one day found some chickens in her raspberry bushes. She told her neighbor that his chickens were in her bushes and he said "I don't have chickens..." and neither did any of the neighbors...

    Quarantine Eggs?

How many weeks do I need to throw eggs out from hens that are new to me and I don't know their background?

    Feed prices

Local "feed" stores may or may not give you any better price than TSC, which by all accounts, isn't cheap. If all they do is sell trucked in feed bags, it is unlikely. Not necessarily. I run my own feed store that trucks in feed, and I share a building with my husband's business. I'm my only...

    Just learned something new!

LOL! My husband calls my hens "attack chickens" because they'll jump up on whatever we're sitting on and steal anything we're eating. I've conditioned them to come running at the sound of my front door opening.

My purebred Ameraucana hen laid a tan egg!!! D=

    Change in egg coating/color

One of my red star hens has started laying funny looking eggs-they are the normal rich color, but it's like they are coated with a thin whitish layer or something. Today's egg was a bit smaller too. Yesterday I flung the egg over my fence, but today I kept it. Thoughts?

    Any other suggestions

What breed? My young pullets from this year are just starting to figure out they can roost-before they'd sit on top of my nexting boxes.

TSC cheapest or better off with a "feed store"

I own my own small feed store-I'm not a feed mill or elevator-just a retail outlet. Personally, I feel that I *care* more about my customer than a big chain-and quality is VERY important to me...I'm pretty picky about the products I carry and try to be as knowledgeable as I can-NOT simply from...

    Feeding Hay to Chickens

My hens scratch through my hay and nibble on leaves, but I don't consider it a major part of their diet. It makes them happy though.

    Possums

Do you have a backyard with a shed or anything they can live and be "wild" in? It's not legal to keep a wild animal unless you have a license, but I suppose if they live freely in your backyard (and know where food is ) they aren't confined I watched some show where they were trapping...

    Possums

Kudos to you for nurturing those babies I've heard that possums are really, really sweet animals, so good luck in finding a place to take them when they are ready. That being said, however, possums are carriers for a horrible, HORRIBLE condition that debilitate horses. Because of that, *I*...

    Dog jealousy. Please help.

Cisar Milan! Some of his ideas are really strange, but others seem really right on. If they were my dogs, I'd never trust them alone together if you leave the house to run errands. Crate one or both or you'll come home to a tragedy some day.

Is it impossible to raise foal with no mother?

    sick pig

How "bad" was the meat? Keep in mind, what she eats, you'll eat later if you're raising her for meat. Research quality feeds or you'll end up with nasty tasting pork. If she's a pet, you still need to make sure things aren't spoiled. I'm in the school of CALL THE VET. Her symptoms are more...
