Omg, one of the chicks just died. I just heard sudden frantic peeping and looked, and it was on its back. Then it stumbled around the cage and lost energy until it began gasping and then passed.
It was the smallest, and I think the one born a day later than the rest. Sudden heart failure in a...
They did hatch fine, and I actually had a very successful hatch otherwise. They're happily chirping away behind me in my computer room, so I get to turn and see them snoozing or eating or playing. Makes the sad feel better to see them healthy.
Well, the last two eggs didn't make it. I opened them up enough to check, two fully formed chicks and one of them had even pipped internally. No clue what happened :(
This was my first hatching ever, and I used a DIY styrofoam incubator. It took me forever to figure out how to regulate that dang thing! Lol. We had some wild swings in temp here in Florida when I first set them too, but they made it through.
How many eggs can they hold? I'm curious about...
Still waiting for these last two eggs...
To keep everyone happy though, I put some sweet grass in the brooder with the babies. They immediately began scratching and then promptly fell asleep in it.
Well, this is day 18 and no motion visible from the 3 remaining eggs. No pips. I've float tested all three and there doesn't seem to be any motion. I put them back in the incubator on a hope, but when should I give the final say about whether to stop incubating?
The 9 babies that did hatch came...
9 babies so far with a possible 2 more coming. Lots of whites and a lovely mix of other colors. I got them a better heat lamp and they're much happier, falling over to sleep wherever.
Lockdown day! Auugh, there are so many of the quail eggs that are moving and twitching! It's so awesome to see visible signs of life and impending hatch if all goes well!
Well, two eggs down unfortunately. :hmm One wasn't fertilized, but the other has a very obvious blood ring, poor baby. A third might also have a blood ring, but it's hard to see in them quail eggs, so, down to 12, possibly 11.
Omg guys! I did a day 3 candling and saw so many little heartbeats. I was so worried that none of them would even begin forming. Out of 14, I saw at least 10 babies!
That's right! All coturnix, but multiple strains of color and size. I saw a couple of jumbo for sure and they were all kinds of textures too.
They went into the incubator yesterday and it's performing beautifully so far. Fingers crossed!
