I do what's cheapest. Chick starter up until the move into the "big yard" which is about 11 weeks. Then they are offered layer pellets. I looked into doing all flock raiser to make it easier but around here it's $2-3 more a bag. which adds up quickly!

decent and cheap are hard to come by. You could always find someone local to hatch for you. That would probably be much less addicting.

Question for those of you that sell chicks - what do you generally charge? I've got about 30 extra chicks (from hatching and buying assortments) and I don't know what to charge...some are SR, and I have a few Sex-link EE's and Sex-link Marans, the rest are rainbow layers and assorted pures...

Mine are all in the same outside brooder, but there is an area partitioned off by chicken wire - the little chicks can go through the wire to get away from the big ones. I have food and water on both sides of the "wall" works pretty well. By the time they are too big to fit through the wire...

Eugene city council was trying to get an ordinance passed that would require all chickens to be licensed and banded. (wing or leg) Isn't that ridiculous? It didn't get very far.

When I called my Wilco (Springfield) they were very willing to tell me when the chicks I wanted were going to be in stock. Coastal (in Eugene) told me that I would need to call when they got shipments, they wouldn't say what was coming. I know Coastal does a free chick day in March when you get...

Haven't sexed them... But I plan on processing all the cockerels mid summer. I just like the little chickies...Do think its easier to sell chicks or older birds?

I just hatched some backyard crosses, The roo is an Easter Egger, and the hens are my best winter layers, a RIW & a WL. I'm debating on whether I should sell some as chicks or wait until spring and they're a bit older...what do you all think? These are the RIWxEE chicks. cute little balls of...

I think I've got 4 seasons, a week of summer mid-august, a week of winter in January. The rest is either spring - warmer rain, or fall - colder rain.

Looking ahead to summertime, does anyone know of a poultry processor in the Willamette valley? I found one in Scio, but closer to home would be nice.

I like snow. I seriously dislike the super-cold dry weather. 20 degrees this AM. The sun came up and warmed it to 22. whoo hoo. At least snow is pretty. until it gets all mucky and muddy.
