Phooey. What I get for posting too soon in the mornin'. I was thinking about the relatively recent posts (w/in last week or so) he's made on the other thread, very thorough, not nec Dorking specific, but awesome for someone considering heritage breeding, getting away from scattershot flocks.

See if you can find YellowHouseFarm on the Heritage Large Fowl thread. He's a Dorking specialist, and has some A-mazing advice. We lost Bob a couple of weeks ago. I wish a mod would make some adjustments to the first page of his threads to let people know... I'll go ping somebody. :-)

Around here, a gentleman markets his as (pardon my bad spelling - French is not my thing) Coq de vin which is a soup stock hen basically. His 2yo layers. Gets 5$/lb for them dressed out. Supplies all the nicer local restaurants Now, he uses production layers, SO, if you had solid heritage...

Yes, but we haven't been through a winter yet. The lady we got the coops from says it worked great. And we used shade cloth over our quarantine coop in the front yard this summer, 'cause that's the S side. Going to move it next Spring to a slightly more shaded location in the front yard, anyway...

Mine was feed store stuff, too. I tried it once with just soaking, and mold everywhere. Thus the bleach soak. It took FOREVER to sprout, but it did, and no mold... Could also be a 'part of the country' thing? Where I live, you sneeze, and it gets moldy. LOL. Had a boss that would drink lots of...

I have this problem as well. Similar, anyway. Spak 15min in .1 percent bleach, soak overnight, then drain and spread out. Takes 3 days to germinate, then over a week to get greens. Not fun. So working with lentils, black beans, quinoa (for fun), the wild bird seed that I'm not using for wild...

<Sigh> My understanding is that it requires 4 heritage line breeds to produce... I'm trying to find out more. It's not that the MG *is* heritage in the SOP sense, obviously not. But, if it requires good maintenance of 4 breeds, that piques me. Isn't that justification for increases in chicken...

Thanks! I'll keep nosing around. We only want maybe 10 good sized fowl a year. Figure culls will make up the rest, but be nice if some weren't just for the stock pot.

Noticed you are from CA... have you sold birds to/bought birds from people much further N of you? I think the original person was from NH or so... Latitude makes a big difference in daylight. :-)

Good advice. My husband is pushing for most of our laying flock to be Icees... they eat almost no feed, just forage like crazy, and smart. There's also less risk of losing "type" with breeding mistakes, since there isn't really a type. I will breed my HRIR to standard, but within that standard...
