I agree, I have read there is a risk of leaching with ACV an galvanized metal. I stop in at the Job Lot store from time to time, and pick up stainless steel containers and use those. I have also used plastic, but really like the way stainless cleans up.

Thanks - my stomach turned when I read $9.60 a pound. I thought, wow, inflation is crazy! Aha! Thanks for the recommendation on the soaking time. Sometimes I am guilty of more is better.

There is a forum called Random Ramblings https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/7/random-ramblings Perhaps you could start a thread there. And emphasize, if you wish, that it is for sharing information and documentation as well as ideas about what kinds of new research would be most helpful...

The risk of food borne illness is a forum's worth of discussion all on its own, in my opinion. There is a wide range of feeling about all this. I am not about to try to "settle it once and for all." I respect each person's decisions about how to proceed. In the interest of helping people...

Sometimes I soak for overnight, sometimes for 24 hours. I don't know if it makes much difference. Seems to work both ways for me.

If you have an 8 by 10, I would rinse two cups of dry seeds in hot water, then soak them in four cups of water overnight. They do swell up. And then see if the two cups will make a half inch deep layer of seeds in your pan. If you go a little thicker I don't think it will hurt, or you could...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I soak about 10 ounces of wheat berries in a jar overnight. That will make a one half inch thick layer in my pans. I drilled holes in my pans so that it drains fairly evenly, as I stack three or four pans on top of each other. I cut open lids that fit the pans so that the drain holes aren't...

Just soak the seeds, spread them out about half inch thick, that's what I do. Only been doing this 3 weeks. After day 4 or so, the rootlets start sticking together to make a mat.

I hope that as time goes by we can get some good data on the effects of fodder systems on the animals themselves. In the meantime, we go with what we have - stories from people who are doing it, and the results they are getting. I remember being told to watch my salt intake to keep from...

I use a window in the spare bedroom. Just stack some food safe plastic bins with drain holes and air circulation holes, pour water in the top, it drains through to a bottom bucket. The window light is enough for greening up. I keep the house at about 55F. The window area probably gets a...

I have about half an inch of soaked seeds in the trays, no other medium, just the seeds. That's what I am using, some winter wheat I bought as part of a group bulk order.

I rinse with hot water, wash with detergent (an all-natural brand), rinse again, then use a little oxo-brite and rinse again. Maybe overkill, but I haven't had anything go icky on me. Vinegar might work just as well, or the hot water and detergent may, also.

My setup is in the spare bedroom a.k.a. project room, and I just water with a pitcher. It has been working for a couple of weeks. Congratulations, sounds like a nice setup.
