It's so hot, I'm brooding chicks on the lanai ! No heat lamps or heat plates!

Help! Had 5 chicks kinda dumped on me...and they are dying one by one! Have never lost chicks in my previous batches, but these are going quick! Symptoms are lethargy, loose stool,(no blood) and then death! Appreciate any advice. Yes, under heat, and being fed chick starter...

@cmom: thank you for posting the farm swap info for these areas! I am SO going to at least one next month to look for brooder stuff ,incubators, maybe nest boxes.....lol. And whatever else I "need". Also nice to know I will have a place to take extra roo's and sell eggs, in future! Woot!! :D

Uh....pretty sure Neosporin has something toxic in it to birds...zinc maybe? Probably better to use a poultry/ livestock wound solution from feed store. ( I use Dr. Naylor's Red Kote?) I could be wrong about the Neosporin, but I swear I remember one of my chicken care books saying it was not...

Looks very much like a Black Star to me, rather than a Black Australorp. (A sex link) Great layers. My Australorp chicks had off white bellies and a few spots of it under their chins too.

Poppycock: do you give whole oats or crimped? Does it matter? I know old timers say give corn in winter, oats in summer....

I am putting the coop in the vicinity of a huge old live oak we have in back yard, and installing a solar powered vent fan in also for circulation if nothing else. I heard that misters are pretty cheap? I also have a special water on my wish list that taps into a drink cooler, so that the water...

We have had a nice spring, and gearing up for summer! Getting those seedlings to get some growth before the heat hits in force! And it's baby chick season too!

I plan on trip too...depends on my sons mood that morning, as I will also be going to the poultry show that evening. But if I do go...I will be on lookout for chick supplies, and or herb seedlings....If I don't make it this month, will be next month for sure!!

They do make a snake repellent at some pest control places...not sure what's in it....may be same as sulphur/ mothball thing, but if you are losing eggs......
