Well I finally finished my bigger new improved brood box for my 2 golden comets. It is 2' X 2' X 4' long. I used a set of vanity doors my brother gave me for the top lid giving me access to both the nesting side and the food water side. The wood I picked up from the cull box at home depot. The...

The scrap wood bin should be in the back near the cutting machine. It has various sizes of wood with painted ends. The paint indicates price, always worth a "look-see" if you own chickens.

The chick starter should have eveything they need, at least from what my feed and grain store said. I use oyster shells for my old hens and figure they can scratch up their own grit somewhere on this farm LOL

My 2 new Golden comets arrived this past thursday so I gave them a quick "rubbermaid" brooder.
Old screen is really just to have something to clamp the lamp to, 60 watt bulb and food water they were all set. I will be building them a 2X4 brooder as they will quickly out grow this set up, but...
L*A*G* :
i see that a lot of you put a few "inches" of wood shaving in your brooder. if u put a lot of shaving and have enough space, do u have to change your brooder every 2 days or so like me?
I used a lot of shavings, also adding DE to the shavings seemed to keep it clean longer also...

This one is great, I have 2 golden comets coming at the end of the week and plan to adapt a cat carrier for them, I don't think my 1 yr. old Aussie Bonnie would be as quick to give up her "room" to some day old chicks LOL I do plan on putting the carrier on top of her crate, critter...

My two cornish hens would have no problem jumping 2' at 4 weeks old so i'd go 4' and plan on them using any roosts to hop out and explore. they arent as lazy as you'd think LOL

Yes they are aren't they. And they grow so fast. Mine have spent their first week out in their luxury coop out back and I miss having them in the house. But I head out there 3 times a day to visit. Lately they have taken to cleaning the snow off my boots, so i gave them a snowball. I...
here is what I came up with. I used a 2.5x4 foot wooden crate that i found in my barn knock out the bottom and replaced it with some screening, put some chicken wire on the top to keep the cats out. The bubble wrap is there to hold in some heat as I'm to cheap to run the heat yet for people. LOL...
Very interesting brood houses from everyone. I personally used a 2X4 wooden crate with a fine mesh screen for the bottom and about 4-6" of pine shavings on top of this. I did put a 1" chicken wire top on it as my 2 cats were overly curious about the "fuzzy mice" that make bird sounds that live...
