Even with Sunniest Summer and Spring you’re still not selling me on it! Nope... too cold for my blood. I’m impressed you can garden that far north, brrrrr!

Yes -63 is insane! I would think you might be able to run meat birds in the summer ok, but if you wanted layers they would need to be overwintered in a heated environment for sure. I couldn’t survive those temperatures... no wonder fruit is so pricy up notrh as well. I imagine even shipping...

Welcome to BYC! Meat birds are a wonderful idea. They taste amazing compared to even the best store bought chicken... raising them outdoors and on pasture makes a huge difference.

Here’s our old girl! My Husband learned to drive on her (a long time ago ;)) she needs some serious repair work as the cylinders are seized up badly... his father switched to the new John Deere with a front end loader, and she was left out in the pasture (literally) for a few years before we...

I’ve got a mix... I won’t go into all my boys! I’ve got two blue Copper Marans (I thought I was getting black) three Isbars (two splash and one blue), two Barnvelders, and three “Sapphires”. I got them from West Coast Farms in Duncan... and I’m super happy with them. I got most of them as...

Haven’t been seeing updates on this thread! Frustrating... It sounds like everyone is gearing up for spring! We’ve got decent weather again here in the gulf islands of BC, so I’m hoping to get some progress on the house build and start my meat bird project soon. I’m still building out tractors...

Slowly on the house... oh so slowly. Never work with family is becoming my new motto. I’ve been doing chicken/life updates on another thread I started to sort of condense all the chaos I’ve got going on. Here’s the link Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures (hope I did that right!). If you’d...

Alright so I have learned a few lessons the last 24 hrs... they are fine with the snow, but without arial predator protection, they are staying safe and warm locked in their boxes! I have been voted the most likely creature out of the 27 of us up here to get frostbite... out of my husband...

Even though it is ON them??? They aren’t going to get wet or frostbite overnight? I’ve put up some plastic to stop more from blowing in on them... the wind never comes in from that direction, but we also don’t get snow here! And thank you so much for your answer! I’m completely terrified for my...

Anyone have any experience with chickens that have snow on them/their roosts when they roost up for the night? I went down to pick up my dishes and laundry from the farm house where there’s power and when I got back a freak snow incident has happened and it blew into their roost boxes and...

-20!!! Brrrr! Sending you warm thoughts it’s -1 here now and that’s too cold for me. I’m definitely thinking about upscaling the winter accommodations for next year. Once my house is up and the meddling bureaucratic BS of that is over, I’m thinking about a large enclosed fixed coop for winter...

Winds are supposed to let up tonight about 7... I just feel like a terrible chicken mama keeping them locked in! They are huddling together well. Unfortunately the leeward side of the barn has a lot of stuff piled near it, including my current 5th wheel accommodations, it would be an all day...

We’re getting our second really nasty windstorm of the season in the Southern Gulf Islands of B.C.... last night I went out at midnight and slashed the tarps on my chicken Tractors... one still managed to move about 15 feet. Gusts are up to 90 kph. This morning we cut the center sections of tarp...

I miss the colours of the poplars in the fall... we have a few big leaf maples and Garry oaks, by mostly grand fir, Doug fir, and western red cedar. We have some yew, arbutus, and the occasional juniper as well. A few alder... and the second largest dogwood in BC. One section is 1/3 old growth...

And if you’re prepared to gut it fully, redo the insulation, wiring, and plumbing... well they certainly don’t make them like they used to. Great bones, sensible floor plans... I wish that had be a feasible option for us! I had 2 perpendicular layers of 3/4” tongue and groove fir sub flooring 8”...

A Trailer in Alberta in winter??? Well I’ll quit my whining then! We wanted to buy an older home and relocate it at first... then we remembered our last 1950’s one that we renovated and some of those fun little surprises, and the logistics of getting ferried and then it up to the site... we went...

It would be if I was an American... it’s the Canadian part of the same island chain. There are 5 decent sized Islands a bit north of the San Juans in Canadian Waters... sort of between the southern end of Vancouver Island and the mainland. I’m on the most sparsely populated, about 300 permanent...
