I love that Brahma. They had some BIG ol' girls at the woodland park zoo, made me really want one, but from what I hear their egg production is a craps shoot.

Yeah, I know plenty of great vegans! As is the case for most things, it's the really loud minority that applies some kind of moral judgement to the human/animal partnership that ruin it for everyone else. As for if PETA is only against factory farms... I found a blog on tumblr not too long...

TBH I would be pretty nervous about anything that did!

Cat food actually! American crows are omnivores though, they eat almost anything.

Well, you can feed them, but be warned that it can attract more than just crows and if you create a steady food supply, much like a song bird feeder, you have to keep it reliably stocked, especially during winter. They'll come to rely on you as a food source, and if you stop they can starve.

See, we got a crow family that makes a nest in the neighbor's backyard every year. The thing about crows is, they are frighteningly smart. And they remember if a person does something good or bad for a crow, and they pass that info on to other crows.... Well first year we moved in, I rescued...

There isn't much you as one individual can do, short of making sure you always source local as best as you're able.

Hook worms ahaha wow dude. His allergies must have been horrendous. Doctors now are treating allergies by slowly exposing you to incremental doses of the allergen, no parasites needed. Turns out there's a science behind people "out growing" their allergies, and it's the immune system getting...

You can grow a cornish cross to butcher weight in that same five weeks if you let it stuff itself on unlimited feed, just like the feedlots do. Of course that's how you get the birds that grow so fast they cripple themselves or die of heart stress.... just like in the feed lots. Conscientious...

Yeah, PETA is full of crap. And even with the big feedlot operations, I don't blame the farmers or their employees. They're usually just trying to do the best they can with what they're allowed. It's the corporations that want to squeeze both people and animals for every dollar they're worth...

I think most people who think of factory farms thinks of battery hens, the meat bird in the ventilated houses packed so tightly together they peck and trample each other to death, the feed lots where cows and pigs do nothing but stand around on bare dirt or concrete eating high calorie grains to...

Can you get Scratch and Peck locally? My birds have been thriving on it, and it's not a pellet feed, so it might appease his pickiness. Blackoil sunflower seeds on the bird feed mix are great treats for protein, but the rest of it is basically scratch.

See, and here I was thinking I would need to wait until getting out into some property before keeping meat rabbit just because I didn't want to freak out the neighbors, but now I'm thinking about if I can set up a processing station in my shed...

PETA is not an animal welfare group, they are an animal rights group, and believe it or not, there is a difference. They are guided by the belief that animals are equal to humans, and use this to justify the most bizarrely cruel and repulsive behavior both toward people and pets. They run one...

Even when they didn't grow them themselves I've found my kids get excited about the food that comes from our garden. My 7 year old daughter claims she hates carrots, but last year she was hovering around harvest time; she couldn't wait to try fresh carrots that came right out o the ground!

HAHA My cat probably would have tried the same... except we have a rooster that's like twice her size, and she's smart enough to think twice about it. She still likes to stalk them tho.

Topic moved on but my dog, who is 10 this year, only saw his first chicken last spring when I presented a chick for him to sniff. I didn't even let him get excited, any reaction other than casual sniffing got him scolded and he's been fine since day one. He's taken to following the flock around...
