Here are just a few of the chicks I received from Max (mstrawn3). The cuteness factor for BLR chicks is off the charts. I wish I was a better picture taker......
Yes, let's not leave anyone on this thread out, DMRippy, chickenhill and ki4got I have learned so much from reading your posts! And everyone else who has ever shared a picture, asked a question, answered one or given suggestions, thank you! Thanks to everyone on here, you all are the best...
I love reading all the wisdom in this thread and talking to such like minded chicken people. You guys are great! :clap
So, I'm going to be putting these 3 in a breeding pen next week just to hatch a few eggs and see what I get. They're not perfect, but the best I have right now. The roo is...
Just for fun... here's another picture of roo #1 (Oscar)
Again, he's molting and his chest and tail are usually much fuller and rounded.
And another question for those of you who have experience, I have not been able to hatch a single Black Laced Red that doesn't have this double lacing...
Did you see both hens? :)
Also, just to clarify, which two roos? #1&2 or #2&3? I decided months ago that I wouldn't use #3 for breeding because of his deep split breast.. it's really bad :(
Roo #2 (Handsome) was bred by Hardinpoultry (but I think she goes by heirloomorps now?)
He was an extremely slow developer, both in size and feathering. Poor guy had no feathers for the longest time!! He has really been filling out and feathering in quite nicely just within the last few weeks...
Thank you :)
So, just to give me a better idea, is his body type what you would consider more of an ideal Wyandotte body type? (Of the 3)
And, btw, I ordered chicks from Max that shipped out this morning. They should be here by Wednesday. I've admired his birds for awhile. Maybe I'll get a...
This is Henry, he is 1 year old and bigger than both the other two roos. I wasn't considering him as an option for breeding because of his split breast. Just wondering what your opinion of him is, if you're willing delisha? :)
Don't be sorry, I respect your opinions! Thank you! Doesn't mean I will agree 100% but I definitely consider and respect anyone's advice. :D
In the past you have had great things to say about him, these pictures are by far NOT his best. I watched him mature since hatch and a picture can only...
Ok, here are the boys I'm choosing from. All of these pictures were taken today in order to give you the most accurate representation of my boys.
First is Oscar, I've posted several pictures of him on this thread. He's 15 months old now and molting, keep that in mind because his chest and tail...
Thanks delisha :)
Last summer I sold off all my BLRs in an attempt to start fresh and get better stock. Out of dozens and dozens of eggs and chicks, these two girls are the best I've got. It's a start at least. They are 7 months old and just started laying, I want to get them in a pen with my...
Also, here is an update of my roo Oscar. I really love this boy. He has things I really like and some things I really don't, but he is the best I have from the ones I've raised. I am looking for pullets who contrast his faults.
I don't typically like the use of splashes in a BLR breeding program, however I am really liking the deep dark red on this pullet. Her color keeps getting better and better with each molt too. She gets more and more mahogany each time and her lacing gets more defined. She was practically pure...
If comb is red and bumpy at 4 weeks, most likely a cockerel. :)
The birds in delisha's post are Jerry Foley's birds. Beautiful! Aren't they perfect!! Foley is the best as far as BLRWs are concerned.
