    Cochin Thread!!!

I was trying to catch up on the HUNDREDS of pages of posts since last time I was on BYC, but I didn't make it past this! Beautiful bird! She reminds me a little of a pullet I hatched this year. I wanted to cull her, but my husband made her his favorite little pet and named her "Scarecrow"...

I'm jealous of everyone posting pics of this year's juveniles. All but my oldest hatch from this year are still in brooders, and I have 2 hatches left to go! I'm ready to be done with brooding for the year!

I lost my favorite Blue cockerel to heat 2 summers ago. He's the only bird I've ever lost to heat, but I'm so paranoid about it happening again! It's been hot here in WI so far too (well, it's WI, so it's 105 degrees one day, and 43 degrees the next... ). Good luck keeping yours cool!

That sounds just like the hatching season I was having up until about a month ago! Zero fertility. Then I got my act together, bushwhacked everyone's butts, and I'm having fantastic hatches! This batch came out of the incubator this morning - 11 eggs went into the 'bator, 100% fertility, and...

I wish I could hatch Columbian girls! I only hatched 3 pullets last year, and all the Columbian chicks I've hatched so far this year are crowing in the brooder! Must be something in the water here. Either that, or I'm just super-talented at hatching boys. My best breeding quad of Columbians...

Pulled these 6 cuties out of the incubator less than a half-hour ago. These guys are all full-blooded siblings from a paired mating, and this was a 100% hatch! I can't wait to see how they all turn out!

I don't quite have my chicken color genetics all worked out like I do with my duck color genetics, but I believe they'd primarily hatch out Blue, leaking some gold, and perhaps with some Mottling or Columbian markings. It really depends on the specific genetics of the Mille Fleur you're using.

    Cochin Thread!!!

It's been awhile since I was on this thread - I've been focusing on re-building my Call duck flock after our move to the new house and haven't had much luck hatching any Cochin chicks, only a few new babies so far this year. I just HAD to stop in and share this picture though, it's too cute!

I'm a little late on this, but nice set-up! We have an old poultry barn from the 1930's on our new property that we'll be restoring (painstakingly - it's a beautiful building, but part of the roof is caved in at the moment!) and setting up something somewhat similar...

I've always meant to put this little girl in with my last pair of Blue Mottleds (she's in a mixed pen of "pet" chickens we're not breeding right now)... as much as I want to stick with just ONE color variety (Columbians), I think I might just have to do it this spring and see if I can manage to...

I think Splash Cochins are awesome-looking birds too. I've been itching to get some for a couple years now, but my husband won't let me because he thinks they look like "a white Cochin that got all dirty"!

    Cochin Thread!!!

It's good to be on here again! So much going on lately, there's no time to think too much about the birds. It'll be at least 2 more weeks or so before we get all moved into the new house and get the birds moved (the house was a foreclosure and was winterized - we need to get electric back on and...

    Cochin Thread!!!

I had a Columbian cockerel who held his wings like that - I ended up having to cull him for other reasons. Anywho, all of my birds were ranging free for at least 4 hours a day at that time, flying up into trees and whatnot, and I have small roosts even in my small 4' wide x 4' deep x 2' 6" tall...

    Cochin Thread!!!

Hi guys! It's been a LONG time since I've been on BYC! But Craig's been bugging me to come back, so here I am. We're in the process of moving, so the birds are all being taken care of by relatives and my husband and I are living in town about a half-hour away. If the bank cooperates, we'll...

Quote: What color are they? Very interesting color! They're sports out of DANNY's Blue Mille project. I'm banking on them being "Blue Patterned Silver Columbians" - Columbians with the Black pattern diluted to Blue. These two look a bit light in the hackle/tail area to be Blues (they're not...

I just thought I'd share this because it's neat. Look at the difference a month has made in my "Argento" & "Abigail"! These two came from DANNY. I like taking age-progression pictures like this. Helps me not to despair so much when all my babies are in that seemingly unending "ugly" stage!

My little Mottled pullet, "Miracle", is growing up! I think she should be around 6 months old now...I'll have to find my calender, it's written in there. She was a very late autumn hatch last year, brooded all winter long in my basement. And of course she decided to take a poo as soon as she...

Quote: Are you having your wedding the day of the Portage show this fall. I will be very close on the way up and hope to see your Columbians. I don't have as many hatched as I had hoped to by this time but still have over 40 candled fertile Columbians eggs in the incubator and collecting eggs...

Quote: I love the splash! I love the Splash color on Cochins too, but my fiancée thinks they look "like crap". Just wait until I hatch a couple Splashes out of my Blue Mottled pen - I'm keeping them, and he's just gonna have to deal with it!
