I am very new to Cochins, and pretty new to chickens in general. I have a question about your pics. Are they current(did you take them within a few days of posting)? The reason I asked is I have some chicks that were born 4/6 thru 4/8 and they are much more feathered than these. My two that looked sort of like your top pic here, now look like this(I think they are both cockrels, but what do I know):


Zorro, aka Zoria, low man on the totem pole. The flash sort of washed things out a bit, sorry.




Lil' Bear or Bear, is this pattern/coloring considered mottled or something else?

Anyway, just curious about what appears to be a large difference in feathering for approximately the same age birds. Are there other factors in how fast chicks get their feathers, like where, at what temp the area is...etc?

Can someone please help me sex these cochins. I am still new and not quit sure but am guessing so please tell me if I'm wrong. Some were born on 3/28 and some on 4/7-4/12. I don't know if the 4/7-4/12 are still too small to sex.....

Then some of these were born on 4/7-4/12 may be too young yet.

yes, the black is a cockerel for sure. the other, no i don't think it's a mottled. but maybe a birchen? but i'm not sure what birchen cockerel would feather in like at that age. i'm still not up 100% on the patterns. i've had silver laced and mille fleur and partridge, and he doesn't look like any of those IMO. kind of a reverse of the silver laced. they had white center with black edge.

I think pullets feather sooner. But cockerels will have bigger combs than the rest. if yours were born last month their feathering is fine. I am suprised at the low amount of feathers on the pics you quoted. mine are less than a month and 4 out of six have completely feathered wings and one has feathers coming in rapidly everywhere else.

It's been awhile since I was on this thread - I've been focusing on re-building my Call duck flock after our move to the new house and haven't had much luck hatching any Cochin chicks, only a few new babies so far this year. I just HAD to stop in and share this picture though, it's too cute!

I don't think it is a birchen. I don't know for sure so will not speculate.

Yes they were actually taken the day I posted them on here. I was just picking them up one by one and they were probably thinking I was crazy. LOL. I need to know what I have and what I need for next spring. I would like to have a couple hens to 1 rooster of the colors I have, and still need more colors but can't find eggs close to me without getting damaged to bad by the postal service or are unfertile. I just ordered a dozen was sent 14 and none are showing anything, 10 of which had loose air cells. So frustrating!!

I didnt see but one frizzle? The first two are for sure cockerels, the coloring of them give it away, even if the combs dont. Something that may help you when trying to sex birds your unsure about, forget about the combs and look at other aspects. In Cochins (just in my experience), males usually feather out slower than the females, and the females also get their cushion in before the males. The males usually will have wings with a bit lower wing carriage than the females, and they males will also have a slightly thicker leg. Looking at the feathers will also help you, some birds look really different of the same variety, depending on sex. Partridge, Silver Laced, Golden Laced, Birchen, Brown Red, Barred, and Silver Penciled, IMO, are of the easiest varieties to feather sex, as when they start getting fully feathered, the pullets and cockerels will be a different coloring. But as far as Blue, Black, White, Buff, Mottled, etc its a little harder to tell just by color, so pay attenton to the shape of the feathers, rather than the color. Hope this helps.
