That is A LOT of chicks to lose. Must have been very hard. I was thinking it could have been off gassing from something. Your light or whatever the brooder is made of. But reading your description of mold and dampness that would definitely do it. I don't think deep bedding techniques are meant...
The third, and final, chick just hatched! I'm so happy that every egg that made it to lockdown hatched. Looking forward to the future and hatching out these chicks offspring next year.
It's just a cut down cardboard egg carton. Nothing fancy. I prefer to hatch shipped eggs upright. It won't save a doomed hatch ( bad humidity or temp) but it does seem to give an edge to iffy eggs like this one. I have less DIS when hatching this way. Everyone does it a little different. Cutting...
I have two pips! I'm so delighted the dark egg pipped. It has a terrible aircell coming down 3 sides and lost over 20% it's weight. Hopefully by the end of the day I'll have a 3rd pip and some chicks!I also realized I forgot to put down the shelf liner. Damn it. Always something.
My remaining 3 eggs went into lockdown today. The one with the worst air cell had movement. It's saddled down 3 sides. Just have to wait and see what happens. My plan is to pick up a buddy from Tractor Supply if only 1 chick hatches. My broody hen is patiently waiting for whatever chicks I give her.
On a happy note my little black hen went broody again. So if any of these little guys hatch they'll have a real mother ready for them.
Here she is with her last clutch of Marans and Olive eggers.
Day 10 here. My beautiful Marans eggs are down to 6 remaining. Shipping was a lot harder on them than I thought. Lots of quitters and super wonky air cells. Of the 6 remaining 3 have movement. 2 had definite development but are too dark to tell it they're still going. The last one I think is...
I didn't have a anything as formal as a hatch schedule. I just hatch when I feel like. My first hatch this year was the Easter hatchalong. This will be my last of '19.
I took a quick peek (candle) at my BC Marans eggs today and plugged in the auto turner (day 4). It appears I have 9 with development, 4 maybes, and 1 dud. They'll be weighed and candled on day 7. Otherwise leaving them alone. I'm always happy to have any development. Shipped eggs are such a gamble.
I find the more instruments I use the more stressed and confused I become. Over time I've found the 2 thermometers that came with my incubators to be the most reliable and consistent. This after trying probably 6-7 other thermometers and hygrometers. This hatch I'm weighing the eggs weekly. Then...
I've never had Red Rangers but I fully agree the dual purpose breed make pretty poor meat birds. They still taste great just scrawny.
Next year I'm going to get some Sagitta chicks. As one last try for a dual purpose bird. Should be interesting.
Looks like I'll be joining the September hatch a long! The Black Copper Marans eggs were delivered yesterday. 15 shipped, 1 cracked. They rested 24 hours. The remaining 14 started incubation today. I won't plug in the turner for another 3 days. The plan is to hatch upright in an egg carton...
