I have some 9 month old Blackstars and they're great birds. I came home tonight to close the pop door and do a head count and noticed one girl had feathers missing from around her neck and most of her tailfeathers were gone. She was pecking and pulling at her tail feathers and the area around...
Thanks Fred and all other responders, she's one of eleven so if she passes it won't be a huge loss. Being as how this is my first flock, I'm just going to watch and learn. The good thing is she's not getting any worse so I'll keep an eye on her and see what develops. I'm still wondering if she...
I have a 7 month old Black Star that started acting very lathargic about a week ago. She walks around slowly like she's drugged or something. Sometimes she roosts in the coop at night and sometimes she stays in the run. She makes her way to the feeder and waterer alright but has stopped laying...
I have 6 Black Sex Links & 5 California Whites. One of the Whites has gone broody, much to my surprise. She's also roosting in the nestbox. She just started this week and, for now, I'm letting it run it's course. If it continues I'm going to have to do something. Any suggestions? Also, when I...
Man is it warmin' up! I make sure my girls have plenty of water, shade and airflow. I don't want to baby em but I don't want em to suffer needlessly. Should I be doing more?
One of my chicks recieved a small tear in a wattle and it bled some. I was concerned about the other chooks pecking at the wound so after cleaning the tear up with clean water I put her in quarantine. Then I got to thinking I need something to treat the girls with in case they recieve a wound...
I remember, some time ago on this thread, someone talking about the hooklike device used to catch chickens by the leg. Could anyone tell me how to make one of these, where to buy one , or refer me to a thread describing the hook?
I got my first egg today from my 19 week old California White. It's small (as I expected) but otherwise perfect. Are the first eggs OK to eat and would I be better off leaving it in the nest to encourage the 10 other hens. I have 2 golf balls in each of the nesting boxes

So Bee, you can add Braggs to a gallon of regular ACV and the resulting mixture will be as good as the Braggs? My girls have been on Braggs since they were 3 days old and I don't want to give them a watered down version.
I'm going to band my 11 chooks with the plastic splitring type bands. I'm thinking I'll need to do this after dark when they're roosting. Do I just pick them off of the roost one at a time, band em , and then replace her on the roost and go to the next one? I've never disturbed them after dark...
Ridgerunner, I just installed the nestboxes on Sunday and the girls didn't roost in them Sunday or Monday nights so maybe I've fretted over nothing. I just wanted to be ready if they did. Re: fake eggs, should I go ahead and place some in the nests now, and if so, how many in each nest?
