My flock has Wintered well without any additional lighting or heat. I choose to give them a chance to rejuvinate their laying systems during the long cold days here. The egg numbers have picked up quite a bit in the last week. I'll be moving my rooster in with hens soon, in prep for a April...

I don't disagree with what you are saying. Your situation is prolly due to bator problems for the most part. The cross beek you have must not be very severe...or it would be anemic and should be culled. I stand by the fact that cross beeked is hereditary. The two different Sportsmans that were...

I have my own opinion in regards to some advice you have been given 4H mom....The cross beek is indeed hereditary and due to it being severe....It's a cull to save future starvation, and suffering, and is not a breeder anyway. I have the same line....it's not a incubation problem....these are...

Check out the bags for meat maker chicken feed...the stuff used for feeding meat chickens. The back of the bag will tell you if it is gamebird feed or not. The Fleet Farm stores here in Wi label their gamebird food as such. bigz

I've never had a Buckeye roo that was a man fighter. They have all been friendly even during breeding season in the Spring when days get longer and the best come out of them, however I've had other breeds that were terrible for man fighters. One can cull all those male birds and still have the...

Quote: I had two cockerels hatched Feb 28 and fed 25-30% protein feed (30% Purina Game Starter diluted slightly with 19% chick feed) They got much bigger and finer than their father by end of July fair time and did well there. I really feel the earlier higher protein diet made a big...

Early Evening All.... Time to share a couple pics of the dominant roo here on the hill. Libby is 15 months now. He is very man friendly. I have a small goup of young ones from him that are 16 weeks old now. They love room to roam, and don't sit long in one spot long.

Evening All...yep the ones with the heavy shanks do have a brighter red comb for the most part, but like you said Chris not 100%. My flock is also both the dark and lighter color. I'll have to take some picks next week to share. WE have the Wi byc bash this week end, so I'm kinda busy with...

They are really hard to tell for sure. I have 13 birds that are 12 weeks today. I'm thinking the ones with the thicker legs and bigger feet are males....also the tails in the pullets look like pullets. If that makes sence.

Evening to Everyone, just stopped by to say that the flock is doing fine. They love to free range like no other breed. It's seconds from the time I open the pen door til they are free for the day. My flocks all enjoy freedom and free fresh live food. The way God ment the flocks to be, in my...

Evening to All... been upping the protein in the diet of the bucks....game bird feed, cat food treats that are 32% protein and treats like pork liver fryed and cut into small pieces for a way to clean the freezer and see things get used up. Nice breed and doing well... ~ bigzio

Evening All... facilities are king. If one has spaces for projects, it makes life fun and simple. the problem is where to go with who is a problem bird, or whatever the situation may be. More pens and more housing makes life easier. That's the hardest part of growing the flock, in my opinion...

Good Evening, and thank's for the higher protein input...yep, I'm a fan of cat food for treats. With the back door open to the house shooing hens out is daily practice....didn't give any to the young buck's, but will start for sure. I have a question in regards to broody hens.....how do the...
