What a cute dog! So sweet that he's watching over the babies. My dogs are a little too rambunctious for chick-guarding duty. They might not eat them, but they'd definitely be too enthusiastic about playing with them.
Congratulations to everyone on their babies! Glad you've finally got some chicks emerging, BellLisamo and Poco Pollo. I think mine are all done- just one later quitter and one that was fishy from the very beginning, and I left just in case. Total of 13 chicks- 10 from my flock and 3 of the...
I lost more than half of my previous hatch due to humidity issues... I think alot of them got shrink-wrapped inside the egg & weren't able to hatch.
This hatch has been much better, though- 13 chicks total, 10 from our flock & 3 araucanas. Two eggs remain, and I don't think they're going to do...
Big hugs and condolences to you, pbjmaker.
Finally got a pic of the first 5 that I moved into the brooder (I couldn't get any good shots of them in the incubator). These 5 are all homegrown mutts, though one of the araucana eggs hatched successfully too. The most recently hatched chicks are...
4 peeps-a-pipping, all from my own yard! Still anxiously waiting for action from the shipped Araucana eggs, but today is just day 20. Hopefully I'll wake up to even more pips tomorrow.
As of this morning, somebody in there is peeping! I can't see any obvious pips, but I'll check again after work. Humidity is holding around 60%, and I added a little water. Things are going MUCH better than my first hatch, and hopefully my luck will hold out.
Argh, this is the hardest part! Looks like my eggs are still good, and the few that are questionable don't smell bad, so I assume they'll be okay for a couple more days. I had terrible issues with keeping the humidity up during my last hatch, so I Macgyvered some tubing to the water wells in the...
I'm so sorry to hear about your babies, starryeyes. A coon got the majority of my flock a couple years back, and though we rebuilt the coop & yard like Fort Knox, I still get nervous sometimes. I'll send good hatching vibes your way for lots of chickies from your poor lost birds.
Alas, out of my shipped Araucana eggs only 3 look like they're developing OK. Most quit early, though only one was actually infertile. From my own flock, 3 were infertile, and 2 quitters.
So, with any luck, I'll be hatching 15 chicks. Here's hoping most of them make it! I'll certainly be biting...
I started some eggs on 6/18. I have 9 Araucana eggs, plus 16 of our barnyard mutt eggs (SLWs, black sex links, modern english games and silkies are involved). The last hatch started with 10 eggs, which resulted in 4 chicks. 3 are roosters, so I'll be left with one adorable little coal-black...
