Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Quote: Surprisingly, after signing up for them to notify me, I got a call this morning telling me they should have some on May 25 as well. I wasn't expecting to hear back that fast; it was a pleasant surprise. I asked for 7 pullets and a roo (I probably should have asked for a couple roos in...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I knew I wasn't getting enough white eggs the past few days, even taking into account 1 broody Brabanter. I found a cache of 5 eggs waaaaaay up in the blackberry bush where the rabbits live. They were all good (it hasn't been too warm here), but I cracked 3 in the process of getting them out:

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

They are from Ideal. I got them last year, when their site also said they were sold out. If you only want a few chicks, they are likely to have extra at some point during the summer. I got an email a week or 2 after I put myself on the "contact me" list. 2 of the 4 I got have crests that look...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

They are on the small size for large fowl, but they hold their own in my mixed flock. Here's a picture of one with a Speckled Sussex for reference. They continue to be good layers (except the broody). They lay some of the largest eggs of my flock. Here's a picture of some of my eggs. They are my...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I am going to try to get out & get new pics of mine this weekend. My broody is still broody, I have some eggs coming for her on Thursday. Hopefully she will stay on them, as she will have been broody for almost 2 weeks by that point.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Update on my Brabanters. I've been averaging 3 XL eggs from the 4 of them per day. But I think one of them may be trying to go broody. I only have 2 nest boxes that the chickens will use (I have 14 chickens, so there's often a line), and she chose the favored of the 2. She just started yesterday...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

It's been around a week since I got a white egg. I'm worried they have a hidden nest somewhere. I looking around the yard this weekend & didn't find anything, but we have an acre with lots of hidey holes. Or maybe they just aren't consistently laying yet, since they just started (I hope) We...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I've gone 2 days without a white egg. I'm going to have to check the yard for hiding places. Here are some pics. They don't really hold still for the camera. The one with the most "character: The 2 with crests that are more Polish than Brabanter: The one that I think looks the best didn't...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

One of my Brabanters is finally laying! I had one white egg Wednesday & one today. Although the Brabanters are my smallest chickens, it's the largest egg I've gotten so far. I'll try to dig out the camera this weekend & get some photos of the eggs & maybe the chickens- it's hard to get good...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I'm going to try to restrain myself & not get more chicks this year. Unless I end up with a broody My husband is not too happy that his workshop is still covered in chick-dust. Of course I continue to read this site & find new breeds that I would like to try. The Brabanters are my husband's...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Unless he's going to freezer camp, I think we're happy without a rooster. The hens have worked out a nice pecking order. I wouldn't call my chicks exactly friendly either. They are not afraid of people & are not aggressive. They underfoot whenever we are outside, hoping for treats, and the...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I'm jealous that your chicks have started laying, since they're a few weeks younger than mine. 2 of my chickens have recently started laying (an EE & a brown-egg-layer), but no white eggs yet. Maybe soon if we get some warmer weather & longer days

Look at all the activity today! I agree that my Brabanters are very appealing, even if they are not up to standard. I'm still waiting for eggs. Flower, I'm so glad you found somewhere local for your roos to live. You'll have to post pics as they grow. They look very handsome.

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Flower, I would be willing to take one of your Brabanter roos if you can figure out a way to get him to me. From what you've posted, it sounds like they're non-aggressive. I don't have any other roos to worry about fighting, but I do have 2 kids, so I can't have an aggressive roo. Albuquerque...

Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

I have one of my Brabanters who had a brief illness where she didn't walk. She now has a slightly twisted foot. I think I read that Spitzhaubens can get some sort of neurologic virus. Can anyone tell me more? That would be my main concern in taking flower's boy. Would all of the babies be infected?
