well, of the 6 eggs from Donna, 5 have hatched! one zipped and quit. same with the Dorkings, one zipped all the way then just quit. go figure. so I've got 8 chicks from Donna plus my Canada girl to kickstart my blrw flock next year. for lots of girls and maybe 2 boys. LOL

he's probably a cross between silver and a red... not a good idea if you're breeding for reds IMO. it would take a couple generations to get a good dark red back quite likely.

at this age you can't tell type... that has to wait until they're considerably older. final assessment would be probably around 6 months or so whether they're worth growing out even further IMO. but yes, they look like blrw, the single comb is a big fault, if you intended to breed.

well, cross fingers for me... I went to move eggs to lockdown night before last, and my incubators had gotten unplugged! not sure how long they were, but the eggs were all cold. got them running again, yesterday morning I saw movement in several eggs, and so far this morning, most of the...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

don't blame just the rooster... the hens have to be split too for single to show up. it's a recessive trait. if both hen and roo are heterozygous for rose combs, then you've got only a 25% chance that you'll get single combs and a 50% chance that they'll pass along that heterozygous trait but...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

well, I have 2 slw and 2 blrw from Donna, crossing fingers for all girls. also picked up a couple blrw pullets at a swap today, but it'll be a while before I see how they're maturing. the adults he had were all kind of orangey, but the chicks looked darker red. got 2 pale blues and 1 dark...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

most of the blrw chicks I've had started out with darker legs. that seems to be normal. the ones I just got int he mail are the same way.

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

well, technically, the "black laced blue" you're referring to, is ... not right... E is extended black. the only thing it doesn't override is mottling and barring. whether pattern is present or not, blues will demonstrate the dark lacing inherent to the variety. that's just part of 'being...
