I'm thinking my temps are playing a part. I have a still air incubator that I run at 101, when I ran it at 99-100 my hatches were 3-4 days late and I had a lot of them fully formed but not pipping. Bumped the temps up and they started hatching on day 21. We've had some crazy weather lately...
What a bunch of cuties. I'm glad to see your post, I just started a thread asking about early hatches.
A few weeks ago I started collecting eggs to put in the incubator. They sat on my kitchen counter in a basket for a few days, depending on when they were collected. I do free range my...
I would hazard a guess one of the parents you met isn't really a parent. I had a "BLRW" chick I bought from a local breeder that started out looking correct but as it developed the "lacing" was similar to yours, ie not really lacing and it slowly faded completely off the feathers he developed...
Try googling the chicken genetics calculator. It doesn't have every breeds codes, but does give the codes for many different colors and patterns and is a good start on what the codes can be for various birds.
Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out. My hen appears to be going broody, so hopefully I get a few more. I already turned off the incubators, but I'm going to let her hatch whatever eggs they can build up in the nest boxes.
Wandered around with my camera yesterday and took some photos of my newest BLRW girls. These 3 pullets (2 splash, 1 blue) are about 6 months old, from a hatch I did last Dec. One of the splash girls has a blue zip tie on her leg to tell them apart. It was a hot day, hence the droopy wings...
These are all photos of the same chick, just different angles.
I'm curious about the feather pattern, I've had some odd patterns on my BLRW chicks in the past (not related to this one) so I'm just waiting to see how it feathers out. Need to dig out my old photos but I'm pretty sure a few had...
One of my Wyandotte chicks that hatched from a mixed color pen I have. There are 2 BLRW roosters, 1 splash and 1 blue, with splash and blue BLRW hens, and some SLW hens.
Definitely don't think this one came from one of the SLW hens, way to dark.
The Gold Laced Wyandotte (GLW) and Silver Laced Wyandotte (SLW) come in just one lacing color as the standard, black. So the Gold and Silver refer to their base color. Farmer Viola already posted a photo of a GLW, these are some SLW.
With the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (BLRW) the Blue Laced...
Do you have any photos of your chicks you can post? There is a fairly wide variation in BLRW in what the chicks look like, at hatch all the way up to a few months old, then they suddenly all start looking alike.
So on this subject, obviously someone wouldn't want to buy adult birds from a sick flock. But are hatching eggs from a flock of carriers safe? What about chicks that were hatched in an incubator, ie never came into contact with any of the adult birds?
If they can be carriers and not ill...
Maybe he will make some pretty mixes :-) He is a really nice temperamented bird, I was going to eat him but put him in my layer flock instead.
I did take my chances and go buy a few more chicks from the same source, they all have proper combs now to see if any mature nicely.
I have a question about color/lacing. I look at a lot of the rooster pictures of not just BLRW but also SLW, GLW, etc and many of the roosters don't seem to have a lot of lacing. On the chest but elsewhere it seems to be lacking. I have a splash rooster and a blue rooster that are like this...
I'm assuming the only birds they raise are their next round of producers. It wouldn't makes sense if you are hatching thousands of eggs to go purchase adults from elsewhere as your next producers. That's why IMO they probably don't really know what sort of genetic issues they are producing...
On the flip side I have had hatchery birds for years and out of all of them only 1 ever died from a cause other than a predator. She was 2 years old and I don't know why she died, at first I thought she was egg bound but that turned out to not be the case, she just didn't seem to feel well and...
This Easter Egger appears to be a red/gold laced blue, which is interesting because I was doing more reading and the various sites I found indicated this color wasn't possible. Not just in Wyandottes, but in any chicken. Sure looks like it might be though.
The chest looks like just...
Considering the birds you posted are splash and not blue, and the birds in the photo you are talking about are blue, they wouldn't have been close to that color as they developed.
