We have 6 gorgeous Black Australorps (end of April 2016 hatch). 2 of the girls were severely pecked in November & stopped laying, isolated them while they fully healed. Both are absolutely gorgeous and laying wonderfully once again. These are definitely one of MY favorite breeds. How do I know...
lol. We catch them then put their breed color band on their leg and they get a special treat when they were finally caught in the act!!
we had that issue as well when all our brown layers laid, only our chicken whisperer son can tell them apart;) now it's little easier as only 2 or 3 are...
ooo pretty, do the eggs vary in shades of color due to the different in australorps? Our BA are medium brown right now and I've heard they end up being darker brown.
thank you I appreciate it. Things are much better now, have lights in the coop, girls are healed up with new feathers as well. They were so bad (blood dripping and big chunks of meat gouged out) I had to pull them out but thankfully, with your advice and several others, they got squared away...
Thx Kurt. She's of course Black Australorp :D this was a surprise as our girls are under a year. Her feathers are coming well. When do introduce the 2 main pecked on Aussie to the flock? Both are mainly healed now and growing feathers back. We have peepers on all the coop girls.
ahhhhhhh. Do you think she was moulting? She has her pecked feathers coming in now, looking very well and all healed. I was worried it may have been the peeper pinching her comb or fact she's not laying. But the moulting makes sense. How long until things go back to normal? Been out of coop...
One of our BA girls (one that had a gash in her and is now fully healed) has a white comb. She got pecked on the bottom of the comb and I sprayed on it. However it's never healed. Is this frostbite or something else? She is not acting off either. She hasn't laid an egg in 2.5-3 weeks now. Her...
our girls aren't even supposed to molt this year and our coop doesn't look like a feather pillow, I think it's a few that were getting thicker feathers perhaps.
if you look at tail feathers and if they look a little ragged or even see skin, they are starting to molt. Our Aussies were extra fluffy and then skin was showing then blood was showing-with the bare skin, the others decided to peck the rest of their back out, by their vents. Much better now...
oops forgot to answer, they have a run. Love apples corn broccoli cauliflower in their treat bin, tried cabbage, didn't like to much:/ trying everything extra to keep them happy and not bored. Definately trying new hanging treats. Switched feed to 27% feed from hatchery, will keep them on this...
there is plenty of space for roaming. These 2 australorps are in separate dog crates now so they heal faster. Good idea about niosponrin and I like ideas about multiple feeders/waters and the extra hay bale. Than you so much
Have a question:
We have many girls (response above) and 6 are Australorps:)
Several days ago they were getting pecked very badly. So bad I pulled them out to our puppy cage, bedding feed and waterer, even scratch. They have laid for past 2 days in cage.
Our issue is they are pecking at each...
our girls are all spring 2016, all but 7 of the 26 have started laying. The last 4 just got are between 16-20wk (started pullets) so they've got awhile.
Not sure why the 2 26 wk Olds haven't started yet:/ hatched 16 May.
One of the new 3 girls hasn't started either and they're all 3 from...
