Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

I believe it is a raccoon, because it seems to fit their profile. But oddly enough I've never seen one out here, even though I've seen lots of skunks and possums, even coyotes and one bobcat, lots of hawks and owls. Even on the roads around here I've never seen one killed, but lots of skunks and...

Thanks whidbey. That was what I was thinking as well. I stayed up the night after to stake out the coop from the window that faced it, but he never came back. My plan was to leave the coop and window open (I was in the dark just behind the curtains reading my kindle) so that the chickens would...

Mine started about two weeks ago. I have about 20 hens of various ages, the youngest being the three wheatens that I kept. Wouldn't you know it? Our very first predator attack and of all birds it took one of my little wheaten gals. Found feathers in the coop, and the bird dragged to beside the...

My wheatens started laying about a week ago, and I'm noticing two different color types. One is medium brown with dark speckling (like my Welsummer gal's egg is but smaller still) and the other is really dark, smooth colored with a reddish tinge to it. So really you may get eggs much like...

That's why I picked this breed Beka. I found that there were lots of great chickens that people want eggs and chicks from, but locally people will gouge you on the price of anything even POL unless it's a marans. If it's all the same to me (and it basically is) than I might as well keep...

In my second picture there, you can see that the roo with no cotton fluff has red edging on his tail feathers. Is that worse than cotton fluff at base of tail or better?

Here are mine, nearly grown up. Sold quite a few but still have 3 boys and 3 girls in my mixed flock. Just saw one of them getting mated for the first time, so I think the boys know that the eggs must be coming soon!

Are clean legged birds the standard out there? Mine are not, because they aren't the standard here, but to be honest I kind of wish they were. I'm just not one to buck the system, lol. If that's what folks expect it's what I'll breed. Still I don't particularly care for poopy or muddy feet feathers.

Only my silkies are laying too! Interesting. They don't lay a lot, but at least we get their tiny eggs.

Got it! Anybody else that is interested and don't need shipping, let me know. I have put up 5 or 6 in the freezer, but the last three all look pretty good to my untrained eye. Would be a shame to process them if somebody out there can use one or two.

Hey Charlie, where do you live? I have some two wheaten roosters someone can have if they are relatively close to me here in Ventura county CA- longshot, I know..

Sorry if I jumped in line with my questions- I did see yours, but I'm a noob too and didn't really have much to offer. This is the right place alright, but this thread just has periods of activity and then inactivity. Welcome to it though, your birds are pretty!

Hey all. Hope everyone is doing well! I have put up most of my culls in the freezer- 5 roosters, but I decided to keep 3 to watch them grow and choose my keeper from. I'm only interested in keeping one of these guys. Thought I might post a few pictures here and see what you guys think. Any...

Yep looks like a cockerel. It definitely bears some resemblance to wheatens, but a cockerel at that age should have much darker feathers. I DO have some cockerels that don't though, so I don't know if that rules anything out. I have a couple that kept mostly red feathering, but they won't be...

Mine are from early-mid May.. I'll be waiting a while I'm sure. But they look so little, I'd be sad for them if they started laying those big eggs now, lol.

I can't wait till I get some eggs from mine.. I have the same problem with my Welsummer girl though. They are just big and wide, don't fit down into the carton properly.

Well, I haven't done anything with these, but buy them, actually. Initially I emailed Bev Davis, but she didn't have any at the moment so she got me in touch with a gentleman named Ben Porter. I'm real happy with them! Now I understand what the deal is with the darker gals, thanks for the...

I know just what you mean. Hopefully it will not continue. I only ever had one mean one (a Welsummer) started really silly, almost kind of 'cute' but he just got worse and worse as he got older. But even at his worst, he would flog me every day, but only when my back was turned. I hope that...

Yep. All things are genetic, but a broken toe, lol. Meanness may not be simple Mendelian genetics (hets etc) but it certainly is genetic in some way not understood. Best thing to do with a mean rooster is eat him. They make a very satisfying coq au vin! I'll try and get some pictures up today.
