Egg bound chicken

How do you help a chicken that is egg bound? We had a fox get in the yard and kill a chicken and Iam sure there was a lot of stress. One of the girls has been setting in the nest box for two days and can not seem to pass her egg, any ideas? Thanks

I'd start by soaking her in a warm bath for maybe 15 minutes, drying well, then putting her in a darkened place for a day or so for the rest. Put some Preparation H or honey on the vent area. See if you can feel, from the outside, an egg stuck at the vent area.

Welcome to BYC!

With mine I start by doing a cloacal exam... Get gloves, KY Jelly and very gently check for egg or other masses. If I find an egg, I give 500-1000mg of human calcium orally. If I want it to work faster, I crush it, mix with water and tube it in. The calcium method usually produces results in less than two hours.

If that doesn't work, turn my water heater to high and fill the bathroom with steam or soak the hen in warm water.
