    Chickens not laying

Hi i have 4 chickens. One is an Easter egger, blue sapphire, red sex link, and silkie. They are all hens for sure. They are now about 21 1/5 weeks old. They have a run. Have been on layer feed. Have two nesting boxes. Have a coop. But they haven’t laid a single egg. I’m worried I’m doing...

    The World's Best Fried Rice

The World's Best Fried Rice by Meri Maura Makes about 4 servings (a serving is a big bowl full!) There is no comparison to how delectable this recipe is. It is better than the finest Asian restaurants in the Houston area, and at a much lower price. For meat, I use either my Garlic Butter...

    Rooster or no?

I am torn on whether I should get a rooster for my ladies. I have 6 pullets total. They will be one year old in Sept 2023. I like the idea of a rooster for protection when I let them free range and hatching a few fertile eggs in the future but right now I am having no issues within the flock...

    Bloody egg on new layer?

My pullet australorp just started laying eggs. Today I found a little smudge of blood on the egg. Should I be concerned? Normal? It may have been her first egg. We have two newly pullet layers and one girl is laying every day and her eggs are very light brown. This was a dark egg which I’ve...

    Broody parakeet but no eggs?

I have a female and male pair of parakeets and for the past week and a half my female has spent almost all of her time in the nesting box. Pulling out feathers, scratching around and puffing herself up like a broody hen. She’s become territorial of the nesting box and does not like when I go...

    First egg!!!!

ETA: I just stepped out to go hang with the chickens and found ANOTHER egg! From a different lady! What a cool day! I just had to share my first egg! I wasn't sure if they were going to wait out the winter or not, but someone laid this beautiful, perfectly clean and pristine egg. What a great...

Super broody even after hatching chicks?!

I had two hens who went broody 5 days before my incubator eggs were due to hatch so I put half the eggs under each of them and the hatched. But one of the broody hens pushed away the chicks and continued sitting on the eggs that did not hatch and would peck the babies. I figured maybe she wasn’t...

Do Chickens Prefer to Lay In Indoor or Outdoor Nest Boxes?

I’ve seen a variety of nest box styles while perusing chicken coop ideas for my future coop build. I’ve seen several where the nest boxes are inside the coop (either externally or internally), and some where the nest boxes are outside the coop (appears to be for more free ranging plans)...

Duck in “labor” when laying egg

My silver appleyards have just started laying and one of them, Vidia, is odd. The day before she laid her first egg we noticed her butt was “heavy” (that’s what we call it - you can see their butt looks a little heavier, and since these guys have a bulldog stance it’s very noticeable). During...

Easter eggers started laying.. then stopped

Hello all! I have a flock of 2 buff polish, 1 white crested black polish, 1 sussex, 1 splash silkie, and 3 Easter eggers. All except the silkie were hatched April 1, so they’re approaching 6 months old. About a month and a half ago, the Easter eggers started laying. I got a super jumbo egg...

How do I get ready for 18 weeks girls ready to lay eggs?

My girls are 18 weeks old today and I am wondering what I need to do to get them ready to lay eggs. This may not be a fruitful endeavor at this point as it is almost October in New England but I’m wondering what to do with the nest boxes which up until now I have them closed off. What do I need...

Duck eggs smell like wet dog?

Hey y'all! 👋🏻 I have a very weird question. The other day I observed a strong smell as I was collecting eggs. Usually my dogs are with me (typically I blame them), but this morning they weren't. I smelled the strong smell of wet dog. Upon further investigation.. it was my duck eggs! I know...

    True story!

Wife to husband: “did you check in the corner under the boxes behind that little wooden platform?” What husband heard: “did you check EVERYWHERE BUT in the corner under the boxes behind that little wooden platform?” His answer was yes, but clearly it should have been no! Bahaha!

Is it incubation & air socket? helps please

So my eggs are about 11 days old I think. This is my first time, and I'm afraid am doing it wrong. It come to my attention from a Facebook group that I should be concerned about the air pocket in these eggs. I'm supposed to have a pointy side down. So I took what I have and put them back into...
