I’ve made mistakes.
This is the first time in my life to have chickens (and ducks). We purchased four chicks and two ducklings in the Spring of 2018. Two of the chicks ended up male, both ducks are female. They spent their first months in our basement. Then a small coop that was so high I had...
Back in February a lone Canada goose appeared at our pond. He was sick/injured and sat on the icy edge of the pond for days weeks and barely ate anything. I reached out to our wildlife rescuer and they told me they’d euthanize it since it’s wing was broken. So I’ve been caring for him and...
I've got 6 chicks that are approximately 2.5 weeks old and I've got 4 chicks that are approximately 1 week old. I've attached a picture of their setup at the moment. I try to keep one side of it around 80 for the older ones and under the lamp gets up to 100. I started mixing in chick grit to...
I have 3 Cayuga ducks that are almost a year old. Last winter we kept them in the brooder room of our chicken coop, it is quite large. However, they left quite the mess and to keep the room from becoming soggy and nasty we had to clean it out weekly or twice weekly, and that was still not enough...
Hello, I urgently need to build a duck house (the coop area, not the run) for up to twelve ducks, but I don’t know where to start or what I need. Can you guys post some plans or ideas? Possibly a few pictures of your duck houses? And do any of you have an idea on how to build something I can...
What type of housing should I provide for 10-15 roosters, NO hens, on an Island in the middle of my pond. I live in South Carolina and the pond is approximately 100'X30' with trees and bushes. Our winters are mild but we will get 1-3 inches of snow for two-three days. Do I make 3-4 roosting...
Hi All,
I am new to chickens, but I do know that I have a love for Bantam and Standard Cochins!
I am really curious to find out from those of you who show your poultry, where and how you house your birds. I'm referring mostly to the roosters, as well as the show hens. I have one big coop right...
Hi there,
I am going to be a new duck (4) owner in about a month, along with Flemish Giant rabbits (2).
We are in the process of converting 2 horse stalls into separate duck/rabbits dens that will have an attached outdoor pen.
The outdoor pen will be approximately 50' x 16', predator...
I'm interested in creating an outdoor quail habitat for my buttons and was hoping for some info/advise and ideas. I want it to be like those tortoise habitats I see (will add some example pics when back on phone)
Is this doable? I have heard of people adding quail (although bigger varieties I...
I’m new to all poultry. I have several midget white poults in a brooder now, and I want to build their shelter. Long term goal is free-ranging during day, protected at night (predators are coyotes, bobcats, and standard raccoons, etc). I’ve read that turkeys maybe don’t need full coop? What are...
Hi guys!
My new ducks still aren't eating out of trough, what do you use to feed your ducks? I'm worried it may be a little too deep for them. I've inserted picture of what I use. Also how much should I be feeding 2 adult females? At the moment I'm giving them 340g a day but they aren't eating...
A Village Poultry Plant
by C.S. Valentine

When the latest United States census enumerated poultry, it took no account of any except that kept on farms, and thereby committed an egrarious blunder. Not only are large numbers of poultry kept in towns and...
Hello!
I just wanted to bounce some ideas off of you all. I know chickens LOVE cattle and pig poop, and though it seems disgusting, it's actually pretty good for them, and creates less feed waste, and helps break up the actual livestock waste as they're scratching it around. Seems like a win...
Hi,
I am planning to buy some seramas. Can I keep all the roosters and hens together in 1 coop?
I am planning to breed them also.
Would it be better to keep all my hens together and all my males together? & then when I am ready to breed I would put the rooster I want into the hens coop?
I just purchased 6 breeds of chicken I want to keep them "pure" should I separate the breeds after the browsers or before and should I keep them in separate coops
Coops are a wonderful thing. They house your flock, protect them, and shelter them in bad weather. However, they're also very confusing. There's different sizes, shapes, and styles. Some work better for others, but the perfect one is out there.

Hi Y'all,
I'm already looking forward to chick season next spring and deciding what breeds to add to my flock. I currently have 5 outdoor hens--3 old RIRs, 2 younger Isa Browns--that live in a substantial coop and covered run that my husband and I built ourselves (we have a small business doing...
With winter approaching and temps tonight going into the 40's I've tried to make sure my ducks will stay warm. We've built their "duck house" using the camper shell off my husbands truck. Wood shavings are in abundance, but they don't seem to want to go in their house. What am I doing wrong...
A few months ago, someone gave me a box of mixed sex quail. I ended up with three roos and 4 hens. The roos were fighting constantly so I took two of them out and left one with the four girls. I put the two "bachelors" are in a cage of their own until I could find more girls for them. They're...
